There is no information on this anywhere so I figured I would write it up myself. I am swapping the column from my parts car to my good car. Both cars are 1991 Eclipse GSX. I am sure 2G DSM's are different so 2G guys don't go by this.
I am swapping this because someone stole my car and ripped apart my column. Here are a few pictures of what it currently looks like.
The only time I have to work on this is at night so my pictures suck since its dark and I am working with a flash light. Just started this project tonight and made some good progress. All of the work done tonight is from the donor car. Have not touched the other car yet.
To start you need to get the lower interior piece off that is under the steering wheel. It is the piece with the hood release switch on it. I am sure everyone knows perfectly well where that is. There are two bolts holding this on. One on the left and one on the right. Once the bolts are out just lower the piece as it is attached to the cable that pops the hood. Just lower it out of the way.
Next there are four bolts on the underside of the column. Remove all four of them. Once removed take off the top plastic cover then the bottom plastic cover. Now all of the fun begins.
The steering wheel needs to come off next. Not sure on how to get it off without breaking the horn piece. I didn't have the patience or the time to search for the right way to do it. So I just ripped it off. This exposes the bolt holding the steering wheel on. Remove the bolt. Getting the steering wheel off just requires some pulling and wiggling to get it off now.
Now that the steering wheel is out of the way we have the wiper and lights control piece to get off. There are three bolts holding it on to the piece behind it. Remove the three bolts. The only thing holding this on is the wires. They are not easily taken off. Most are soldered on to a circuit board. Just cut the wires as far back as possible. Now you should be able to pull it off.
That's all I had time for tonight. I still have to figure out how to get the rest of the pieces off. What I have left looks like this and there is no obvious way to get it off. There are two bolts holding it together but no way to unscrew them.
I will post updates whenever I get a chance. Let me know what you guys think. If anyone has any advice or links with info let me know.
