Hey guys so I put a trans in my car. It’s a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse 420a 2.0 non-turbo. And I am having some issues when I wired the starter up I am almost positive I wired it backwards by accident. It got power the way I had it wired first but the battery would smoke and spark. Now that I reversed the wires and put them on correctly it does not get any power at all. Any help with this?

Can you post a picture? I am familiar with this engine.

your ground wire should be connected with a bolt going into the trans on the right. The hot wire should be connected to the starter itself.

The ground should be a thick gage black wire with a yellow stripe and the hot should be same gage black with a red stripe. Just in case they got mixed up somehow.

Your ground should run from the negative side of the battery passing through a chasis ground going into a harness loom and down to the transmission. The hot goes directly towards the ecu from the positive leg of the battery getting spliced from multiple electrical sensor connections then to the hot side of the starter.

Alright I appreciate you’re help. That got her to where she’ll crank but now she’s not getting any fire. She’ll turn over but will not start I’m thinking it’s my ignition pack and ignition wires cause I replaced the spark plugs today and still no fire.

Okay, the next check I would do (other than checking fuses) are the following.

Pull plugs make sure you don't smell gas (this would indicate flooding and you would need to vent the gas to let it vaporize and then try again)

Also check the ohm of your plug wires and make sure to wiggle them a little while keeping connection with your ohmmeter. Plugs for cylinder 1 and 4 should be roughly the same ohm and 2 and 3 should roughly match.

Then you need to check your coil pack while your at it. You are checking for voltage and continuity when you check the 420a coilpack. I believe pin 2 for the coil pack is ground. Pin 1 and pin 2 should be a complete circuit and pin 2 and pin 3 should be a complete circuit. To check the top coils i need to look that up i THINK you are just checking continuity (the metal prongs the plugs connect to) you measure across so you will check 1 and 4 for continuity and 2 and 3 for the same.

Also check the gap of your plugs. For the 420a it is .045 to .048 I believe. I had the best luck with around .046.

I can walk you through the check list process and provide you with pictures, I also have a known good 420a coilpack.

If you have check all your plugs wires and coil pack along with fuses it is possible you aren't getting fuel and the ignition process could be not working because of that.
 
oh also copper ngk plugs are what you want to use. I believe the best ones for the 420a are NGK bkres-6 I believe is the part number. I run these and they are phenomenal.

Hey man i know this is old but I literally screwed up and did the exact same thing. Bought a new starter thinking I fried that stock one but same issue is occuring and my car just loses/cuts all power to all circuits now when I turn key all the way! My ASD, Fuel pump relays are all getting power, i checked multiple sensors and they're getting power... BUT I did not actually wire the thick black and yellow starter negative to the transmission bolt, I wired it to a thick strut tower chassis bolt thinking that was fine... could THIS actually cause this crazy issue?
