Good evening, I recently picked up a 1g awd talon nice and cheap, but it has it's problems. First thing i'm trying to knock out is the starter problem. When i first picked the car up, the starter would start to engage, then as soon as it came under load it would just thud, then freespin, without cranking the motor. It came with a spare used starter, so i swapped them out, now it engages, and turns over the motor, but i can see it's slipping (rpm fluctuation), then followed by a hellacious crunching, then repeats. Can the starter be adjusted or deshimmed to engage better, or am i looking at a destroyed flywheel. Comments/concerns welcome.

Sounds like its chewed up your flywheel.....might be another bad starter but i doubt it...if so you can use any 4g63 starter...

Make sure both of the bolts are in on the tranny mount. If one of them are not the trans will be a little lower and cause the starter to grind and chew up the flywheel.

Good call boost, I just noticed one of the bolts is missing.. I'll pick one up for it and let you know if it helps.

I just realized the empty hole i was looking at is supposed to be empty.. all the bolts are there.. However, one of the bolts for the starter is extremely long, and i think the threads are bottoming out before its fully seated. I pullled the starter again to inspect the flywheel teeth, there are some rough burrs, but nothing catastrophic. So i guess there's still hope that its a starter problem and not an eaten up flywheel. I think what i may end up doing is dropping some cash on a new starter, find the correct starter bolts, and go from there.

check to make sure there is enough area for the gears to mesh. I like to make sure that I can fit the end of a paperclip in the groove of the gear on the flywheel between it and the starter. It'll still engage great, and won't mash anything up. at least in my experience.

Just an update guys.. the problem is still there.. I am curious.. anyone know what the symptoms are of an awd tranny fitted with a fwd flywheel are? I beginning to think the previous owner has blessed me with this, since i have tried everything else, and the ring gear is still in good shape.. he mentioned replacing a flywheel with one his buddy had, and didn't have this prob before he replaced it (old one had cracked).

the car wouldnt move... when i did the standard swap to my car some how i got an awd flywheel instead of a fwd. got it all put back together and the car would not shift when running and to get it to run we had to push start the car becuase the starter wasnt making contact with the flywheel..

so the odds of that are slim....

I recently bought and Evo III and it was giving me the same problem from the time i bought it. I dropped the tranny installed fidanza clutch and fly wheel. Old flywheel was grind to pieces so i thought that's what my prob was. Put everything thing back together same dam thing on my new flywheel. Thought it was the starter...got a new starter wasn't that either. Right now it's in the garage getting checked over as to what is the problem. My next step will be to change the drive on the starter to the compatible 10 tooth one, it's a little bigger thus less clearance to flywheel. I'll be trying it after I get word that everything is fine and can't find anything wrong. The part should'nt cost much probably aroung 15 bucks or so. If i find part number i'll post it.

I've recently came back from deployment and had time to play with the Talon, and the problem is solved. I replaced the flywheel with a Findanza Lightweight (the stock one was extremely chewed up) but this didn't solve the problem initially. I had to re-shim the starter, which allowed the starter to engage smooth as butter.
