Spyder Roof Problems?

Okay, so I have a 1996 Spyder GS that I picked up back over the winter.

The weather in michigan just got to the point where I can finally start taking the top down, and today I notice something- the cross bar that is directly above the driver\passanger seat is not only bent, but no longer attatched to anything on the roof frame. Is this supposed to be attatched to anything? There are pieces of plastic inside each end of the bar but they are completely flat with nothing to attach it back to the frame of the roof.

Furthermore, this got squeezed by the actual roof frame and is now bowed out just enough to make it look like my roof has a bit of a hard on....

I know I can fix that, but how is this supposed to be attatched to the roof? I'd provide pictures of what it is I'm talking about, but right now it's pouring down rain and yeah.... blah

I know what your talking about, although i dont remember exactly what it looked like on my Spyder. Can you take a pic?

Tomorrow morning after it stops raining, I'm going to go take a couple of pictures to compare that to.

So there should be SOMETHING attatched to that bar? there's nothing attatching it to my roof other than the fabric it runs through on my car.

Yes there is a bracket that tuns to the top I have cirled it here in a new pic.

Is what you need to fix it, complete with stainless line, so you won't get the bent links anymore.

Yea, a lot of spyders have this problem, I know mine is exactly like yours. Try not to put the top down till you get the repair kit. It will rip the top eventually.

i just wanted to say thx for the link too. my headliner is practically falling off the top and the driver side metal bracket thing is broken

Calming down now, mostly contained. It's burned up most of it's fuel with no where else to go.

thats good, at least it not like the fires i get every year in sept/oct time...friggen santa ana winds come through at 50+mph and blow fire all over the place

anyways back topic...
other than that bracket being broken, i have 3 leaks.
1 at the driver side A piller meets top corner - the tubes dont line up
1 at passenger side A piller meets top corner - same as above
1 at rear window top seam.

i took it through a gas stations car wash to find out where they were, im glad i had towels in the car already.

there should be a "What's wrong with your Spyder's top + Fixes" thread that gets stickied

This is exactly what you need to fix the problem.. Had the same issue with my spyder and bought a similar kit to make the repair last summer. Install was quite easy and took care of the issue.

i do have a question though. say with those new tops that are on ebay, it will include these brackets, correct? i think i might wait to get a whole new top and install it myself.

I suppose if it specifically says it does. When I bought mine off ebay, it was just the fabric top/glass.

I have to run out to my car and check if I have this problem with the bent metal bar pictured above...

I have a different and I hope a somewhat common problem... on my passenger side near the rear window following up to the rear side passenger window, the top looks like it has some how detached where it meets the black metal base at the bottom of the top. The top looks very loose in that area and sometimes i cant even get the rear pass window up either...


anyone have any ideas?... I have seen pictures of other spyders witht this problem where it looks like the rear pass side convertible top looks loose and sagging.


also where can i get this repair kit?
