So, I'm going to go look at this car..what all do I need to look for?

The link above is to the car I'm doing to look at. Its kinda of expensive. By sellers accounts and pictures Inside and out is nearly flawless. She ain't cheap. Not a lot of mods.

I have several things in mind I am going to be specificly checking. I would like input as to what YOU would be checking out. Obviously stuff you can do on the spot with out tearing things apart. I havn't asked yet about last timing job, but I have most of the pieces for full TB job, balance removal, water pump etc.(as long as 90 and 91 are the same..and I think they are). I talked with the owner and we are looking at $5,000. I have some strange factors with the eloan I got that requires me to spend no less than 5k. I'm looking to get this and sell the fugly, hideous, godawfull thing in my sig. If the car is as great as I lead to believe so far I'll happily pay for a very nice zinced and clean car. Some may not agree. I'm just asking your help on what to check out.

I agree that it's a bit pricey for a 1st gen, but the car looks solid and clean from the pictures. Things I check before I get in are for any leaks under the car and/or in the engine bay. You could even ask for a compression test since those are fairly easy. Prior to driving, make sure that it starts and idles well and doesn't have any idle surge.

Driving impressions are important as well. See how well the clutch engages/disengages and also listen for bearing noise and transmission howl. Make sure the shifter shifts smoothly and without any gear grinding. Finally, make sure that the gauges all read normal during a city and highway run and that that the car boosts without hesitating and sputtering. The time to fix things is before you buy so pay attention, take some notes and then make your decision.

P.S. If you can, ask to see maintenance records for the last TB, balance shaft belt and water pump change.

check the timing belt out, look at the color of the oil (check the dip stick for any debris), rust, etc etc.
 
Well here is the scoop on that ride.
The car was beautifull. except for the floor matts the car looked like nobody ever even sat inside of it. The exterior was very nice one scratch on the hood and a few minor rock chips with two super minor mini dings. underbody zinced. engine looked and sounded great. no oil dripped. car drove awsome, shifted great. I was sold on the car. Did a compression test and it flopped on its face! 90-120-120-120. The family was suprised as they said it was tested 2 months ago by the boys shop teacher and he said it was excellent. I had left my tester outside all winter..possible something happened. So I went to autozone and got another one..same results. I was soo upset, I wanted that car..it was perfect. I told them if by some chance I was wrong and they could prove good compression(not likley) or fix the problem and pass the compression test I'd buy the car.

Man..goes to show even though this guy took good care of the car and things seem perfect..only a compression test will save you from wasting your money on a car that seems perfect. He had recipts for everything from all previous owner too. He claimes oil was changed every 2k with synthetic(apparently his father is very very cautious about car maintenance). I'da said BS if the whole family didn't seem so on the straight and narrow and were on their way to a church sing and such. I still believe they were being nothing but honest with me.

Oh poo..time to look for another.
