after about 20min of driving and putting the car into park... i can smell something like rubber burning smell coming under the hood... a few times ive seen white smoke coming under the Valve Cover..... i noticed this was happening about 4 months ago....

anyone know what the problem might be?

thx

Could be many things. Check your belts to see if they're rubbing. If it's coming from under the valve cover, check your timing belt to see if it's rubbing.

Where is the smoke coming out of the valve cover from? not to be mean but try and give us a little more information and just run along the valve cover gasket to see if there is any major meltige or anything like that and if you dont see them maybe it could be your cam seals?

And check your radiator coolant reservoir. Theres been many occasions where mine came off and rubbed on my p/s belt and smoked like nuts.

Bad place to have smoke comin' from. Hopefully, as aforementioned, it's just a belt or accessory rubbing. Please let us know when you get it figured out!

Try replacing the valve cover gasket and see if the problem persists.

the mechanic replaced the valve cover gasket about 5 months ago... at the sametime i had the timing belt changed because i was at the 60000mile mark.... this been happening ever since it was replaced i thought it would go away after a while because of the new parts but its still here....

Are all of the valve cover bolts tightned down?

you don't "tighten" valve cover bolts, you torque them to the proper specs. if the bolts are too tight the it ruins the gasket, then causing oil to leak onto the exhaust manifold causing lots of smoke.

in the picture you can see some dark spots on the block from leaking oil.

This, I know. By "tighten", I was asking if the bolts were loose or tight......

ROFL What happens when you torque a bolt down? It "tightens", right? OMG :p

PS - If my memory serves me correctly, the VC torque spec is 4 ft/lbs. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

But you do raise a valid point. The head is aluminum and the bolt holes easily strip out. If the mechanic torqued the bolts beyond spec, it's very likely that he stripped them out and the valve cover is not staying tight against the head.

I torqued mine down to "specs" and cracked my damn valve cover. Those inside bolts on the 4G63 cover are the devil. Always tighten them a little at first. You can always go back and snug them up a bit more later if its leaking. I think paul knows his stuff a little, so stop picking on him. Hes sensitive. :p

Are you sure there is smoke comming from under the cover? Thats a new one in my book.
