I know this is probably hey thread but cant find a solution. I just recently rebuilt my engine in my 98 gsx and everytime i drive my car white smoke comes from the exhaust. it didn't do this at first when i got my car running, so i immediately thought my turbo was blown. whitish type smoke is coming out everytime i accelerate a bit. so i switched turbos and it's still doing it. smoke looks whitish and a few times a lil bluish. maybe it's just from the smoke was at outside why it looked bluish................. help i am ready to finish breaking in my engine

White smoke is typically coolant. Did you have the head off the block? Did you properly torque it down in the right sequence? You may have blown out the head gasket, or it could be leaking.

Blue is burning oil. Do you smell oil when you see the smoke?

Are you going through coolant? Are you going through oil? Have you checked the oil for coolant? Pull a spark plug and see what it looks like.

yea i do smell oil and your probably right about the head cause it was leaking around it. Also the coolant had an oily feel to it at times. okay well i have 1g head on an 1994 evo 3 block. do you know what head studs should be used cause i maybe using the wrong ones

alright the spark plug in cylinder 1 is kinda of oily when i take it out, and i don't go through coolant. when i change my oil there is no coolant mixing in it just straight oil when i changed it

You need to fill out your profile. That will help us.

What did you all do to the motor when it was taken out of the car?

we did everything to the motor rebuilt it from scratch. new pistons, rods, balance shaft eliminator kit, 1g head, hx 40(getting oil from the oil filter housing. i am thinking i need to redo the head new head studs and gasket. since this happened i need to know WHAT HEAD STUDS DO I GET IF I HAVE AN 1994 EVO 3 BLOCK. maybe i have the wrong studs and it's not torque properly

my car is having the same problem white smoke from exhaust and i have a 1g valve cover and a steel head.

what else could cause the crazy white smoke?

Do you have a restrictor in the feed line for the HX40? If not you may be sending too much oil pressure to the turbo, causing the excess pressure to pass the seals. Or, if it is actually oil its more likely that the rings didn't seat or were installed wrong causing a blow-by condition, than it is of any type of head or head gasket problem .

1g valve covers are the same as 2g ones, minus the paint. This is irrelevant to any smoking issue unless its an underhood issue caused by a cracked one.

I assume by "steel head" you are actually referring to the head gasket and not the head itself, as a steel 4G63 head was never made.

Same advice to you both, leakdown test, check oil for coolant contamination, and vice-versa, and a compression test. I have a good feeling that this will find the culprit.

If I'm not mistaken, all 6-bolt ARP head studs are the same (12mm nuts), and all 7-bolt ARP head studs are the same (11mm nuts), and I dont think they will even fit unless in the correct application. So I think your ok there.

no coolant in the oil but coolant feels and look a little oily, compression is good as well. don't know if there is a restrictor in the line or not i bought from extreme psi so i will look at the website and check, whats weird is when i had my downpipe off when i started the car for the first few times. the car was fine but at times oil would just shoot from turbo crazy and then stop. when everything was put on and running the car didn't smoke until like 2 weeks later. what does that mean

well did you change your head studs ?????

if so then i think its because you have too much Blow by

i am not sure what could cause it but i think that is what it is

from the exhaust side but that was my old turbo so i switch it and put my holset on there. on ething this maybe the origin of the problem but my head studs are not even all the way through. some are higher and lower then others but couldn't get them to go down any further

That could also be a huge factor. You just keep it coming dont you?ROFL

If the holes in the block were not cleaned out and dry when you went to install the studs (Meaning if there was oil, water, etc... in the holes) they will not thread all the way in. This does not let the studs and nuts torque properly.

I hate to say it, but looks like that heads needs to come back off.

HKS USA Metal Head Gaskets i ment metal head gasket not steel no water in oil dipstick no oil in coolant no coolan in oil for mine compression test concluded cylinder 1 150 across the board all 4 cylinders:beatentodeath:

i said it smelt like gas but i dont think gas burns white... it defanitually could have ben coolant( stock smic) and my coolant reserv tank has a crack in it and it does drip right on he smic. check turbo for shaft play and there is none what so ever but there was oil in my hose and smic

make sure if you put a MLS headgasket that the block and head are both slightly resurfaced... Sometimes, just resurfacing the head won't cut it. Use a light coat of copper spray just to make sure everything will be in tack.
