I have a 99 gst with full 3" exhaust. Mbc. Intake. Bov. Fmic. I was thinking about upgrading turbos from my 14b to a 16g. I Just don't know which one I'd be happier with the big or small 16g? I do have a boost gauge installed and I have a wideband I need to install. Which would I be happiest with? I plan on continuing to upgrade just thought while I have my tax money I should get the new turbo now. Any suggestions, pros/cons will help.

They have approximately 4lbs/min difference (30-40 hp). I think you will be happier with the big, the spool up its almost the same and both are almost same price and both are the best street turbos, if u can get the Evo316g ill get that instead.
The Evo316g have a little bit more juice and we have some members here squeezing 400whp+ out of them, so even if your goal is 300whp the evo316g will be the best and you can continue with a 400whp goal and you can still stay on the same turbo.

A small and big 16g will act relatively the same until you are pushing high numbers, the only difference is in the turbine itself, if you don't want to push high numbers and want a fun daily fast car. Go easy on the wallet and buy a small 16g. Genuine Big 16g's are usually priced a bit higher than smalls. But if you can find a deal on either, go for it.

Hook up that boost gauge! Not safe to have that mbc in boosting who knows what.

If you're buying new, buy the Evo III 16G. It's priced lower than both the Small 16G and Big 16G, and has a better-flowing turbine housing along with a more efficient compressor wheel.

If you're buying used, either one is a good choice....I'd favor the Big 16G in a FWD car as the Small 16G spools nearly as quick as a 14B. I ran a Big 16G on my FWD TSi for 5 years or so and absolutely loved how the car felt and performed on the street at just 15psi.

Since you're upgrading you might as well get the Big 16G over the Small. I have the small and definitely ready to go bigger. If you are buying new go with what jusmx141 suggested (EvoIII 16G), lots more fun and potential.

I'm planning on buying new and this wil mainly be a DD but ill take it to the tracks just for fun but I'm mainly looking to have a fast street car. The marketplace on this site has all the 16g's around 600. Does that sound right or wrong? It links me to extreme psi and sites like that selling them 600 I'm guessing new. Ill make sure they're new before I buy anything

Too bad you missed out on FP's sale. Do what I did, get one used. I got my E3 16G for $150 and it works great. I've had it on my DD for 5 months now and I love it. It's a great street turbo.

Please not there is a massive difference between a Big 16G, and an Evo 3 Big 16G. Between the Small and Big 16Gs, I'd take the small all day every day.

So to me It sounds like I should get the small if I want a fast spool or the e3 if I want more top end power with a little slower spool? But stay away from the big? Any idea when I'd feel full boost on the evo3?

The E3 16G won't be much slower, it's a much better turbo than the old Big 16G - to the point where many here will say the E3 is the answer to any 16G question. Me, I like the fact that you can usually pick up a Small 16G for around $100-$150, enjoy slightly faster spool, and still put down 300-350 WHP.

YAY your thread is RESOLVED!!!! :thumb:

I too, would go with the E316G, people have a tendency to get "power" hunger overtime. Sooner or later you're gonna go there, might as well get something suitable for the near future.

I was in the same kind of situation when I blew up my stock turbo on the gst. I was going to upgrade to a E3 16g. I have been in a fwd with that turbo and seemed to have allot of wheel spin. I am going with a larger forced performance turbo little more lag but much more top end power and little less wheel spin in the lower rpm. On a gsx I have to agree 16gs are fun and aggressive. On fwd it may be too agressivve.

That is what I'm running and don't have too much problem w/ wheel spin. I mean its a GST and the front wheels are going to spin. I have a sleeper 16g w/ an LSD. I can either spin thru 3 gears, or I can feather the throttle and make a decent launch. The real reason I like the sleeper is for gas mileage. U get 28-29 mpg when I'm not red light racing, but it drops down to like 20 once on throttle...

I like the Evo316g. I replaced it from the t-25 and I can difinitely tell the difference. A 16g is arguably one of the best street turbos for our cars. The Evo316g has great potential to put down decent power, and still have DD driveability.

Very happy with my small 16g that I purchased off of Jusmx141 3 yrs ago:D Still holding strong,I run 14psi on my mostly-stock dd GSX. Auto, too! Love that spool up time, very quick!
