I have a 99 GSX, I just changed the oil and just had the timing belt and all other belts changed about 1k miles. Within the last week I have noticed a ticking under the valve cover only when the car is in park and on the turbo timer. When I am at idle at a stop light or something like that it doesn't seem to make the sound. Any ideas? The motor itself has about 40k miles on it.

The car seems to be running just fine, just the noise, I was thining of having it checked out soon as I am going to be making a long road trip from Minnesota to Arizona, but if it is just a noisey valve I am not going to waste the money, I don't think it is anything that serious, I mean the engine hardly has any miles on it. Are the 4g63s prone to this kind of noise?

Lol thanks, I guess this is part of owning a DSM, I have heard some people using Lucas oil treatment and that seems to get rid of it. Anyone here used it to get rid of the sound? If so does it take the place of one quart of oil? Thanks again.

That would be a temporary solution. My friend went to a dealer oil filter and syntheic oil and it seemed to go away for a little bit but then it came back. I havent had any experince with Lucas oil.

I would just buy new lifters for 7.74 for a piece and be done with it forever.

At a mitsu dealer or any autoparts store...But if your gonna go that route and put all the time in..You should build and machine the head...Put a set of HKS 272 cams in there and not only will your noise be gone..but you'll gain insane power!! Just a thought tho...But try the "Oil Stabilizer" Works great...expecially with Mobil 1 oil!! Good luck man!!

Here are the steps I have heard:

1. Use some Gunk Engine Flush
2. Drain oil
3. Change Filter
4. Add Synthetic Lucas Oil Treatment
5. Fill with mobile 1 (5w-30) 3 quarts

Is that going to get rid of the noise for sure? Just want to make sure I am not wasting the money, I did JUST change my oil.

Thanks again guys.

If you want to rid the tick...Put in 10w-30...It's a thicker oil and on top of adding the "Oil Stabilizer"...You should be fine..A little tick never hurt no body..Good luck man

again a temp solution.
The tick doesnt hurt anything. You just may pull timing every now and again and your car will feel like it has no power. Why not just cure the problem forever instead of just masking it.

In my experience, Mobil 1 is the WORST oil to put in the car for lifter tick... It may be a good oil, but makes my DSM sound like a sewing machine.

Check to make sure you don't have a leak on the EGR. That can make a ticking sound too.

That's interesting. I've got the 420a and a couple of months ago I tried the Valvoline High Mileage Oil in lieu of my usual mixture of Mobil One Synthetic and Lucas Oil Stabilizer. The Valvoline caused my lifters to tick so badly I changed back to the Mobil One the next day so I wouldn't go insane from the LOUD ticking.

When doing an oil change, pour in a can of seafoam in the valve cover. Put oil cap back on, start car, let it idle (or drive it real gentlyt around the bloc if you have it realy bad).

Now change the oil.

Works great, cleans the lifters out. Maybe it helps unstick some of them too.

Anyway, it worked on a 90.

The lucas is ok too, but I would try cleaning the crankcase w/seafoam, and use straight oil first.

The Seafoam trick only works for some people...It made my lifter tick worse. But for $5 it's worth a shot.

The smoke show is definitely worth it...The pics are from a 3s, but smoke is smoke. :)
I always loved driving the car around after putting some seafoam in, the looks you get are priceless.
