What's the typical cost for having my 4g63 taken out, disassembled, hot-tanked, and reassembled without any repairs? I might've had a bad build and I probably need new rings BUT NOTHING ELSE so I figured I'd have the block/internals totally torn down and built again right. Any guesses (labor costs)?

First of all, if you think you had a "bad build" Im assuming by the way you say it you had a shop do it, I would take it back to them.

Second - That would cost a lot to remove and teardown. Its easy to say it may just new new rings, but then why dissemble and hot tank it? You would want to replace all gaskets and core plugs and everything if its been run.

The shop here runs about 300-350 just to assemble. Hot tanking a BARE block (you do the teardown) with a check on all the specs (blueprinting) was about 100 here.

Just a couple numbers, but thats a big job.

EDIT - heres a list of numbers you would need

removal of the engine
teardown to the bare block
hot tanked and spec'ed
assembly of the block
everything re assembled (ACC, water pump, oil pump, timing, etc)
engine re installed

thanks for the info. I had a shop in texas build my car, I live in NH. They said they'd warranty the engine but I had to pay for shipping ($3,600 w/engine in car round trip).

Sounds like you would be money ahead to pay a local shop to do the R&R, and then ship the engine to Texas for $200 to $250 via Yellow or Central transport. I as sure you could find a local place for a grand or less.

Why do you think the build is bad anyway?

Yes, but according to the statment above, the rebuild shop in Texas is willing to stand behind their motor, but he is responcible for getting it to and from. Except they want $3600 for shipping.

I think it's a bad build because I've had problems ever since running my tab up to over $4,000 (i.e. spun bearings, scored crank, blown head gasket (all only after 1000 miles). I've gone through 3 timing belts and will be on my 4th by this weekend (1400 miles since the build). I found out today by a fellow local dsm mechanic through this forum site that I have several leaking gaskets (throttle body seal, pcv, blow-off valve) which at first might have been the rings causing this crap, but when he did the crank case boost leak test, it was fine. So all think it was a bad build...luckily the rings are ok.
