Shifter Linkage probs...

Yes, I've searched. I hate the shifter on my 90 TSI AWD. From 2nd to 3rd I have to hit neutral, can not do it all at once. No, not a synchro thing....the shifter gets stuck on the transistion and wants to go into first.

I have been having problems with the shifter hardware. I recently put new hardware on...the big washer, lock washer, and nut. If I tighten too much the shifter bar wont be able to slide around the shaft. But, I dont like it being loose IN gear. My friends 91 has a LOT better shifter. It's like a flatbar stile.

Is there anything I can do? Get a 91-94 shifter? I'm at a loss on how to figure out to shift from 2nd to 3rd SMOOTHLY and not have a lot of play IN gear.

If your sure that it is a shifter assembly problem, then your best bet is to find a 90 to replace it. Otherwise you will have to modify the shift levers on the tranny, and adjust the cables. It's no fun. I'm going crazy trying to locate parts in order to make a jdm tranny fit, work properly with the shifter and match the rear end. If your don't match everything when you replace the assembly, you'll have shifting problems inside the tranny, which is way worse than what you have now.
