i ran out of room i had to prop it on something.. its just my workshop doesnt bother me

Yeah, it looks pretty good. I ended up using Dupli-Color Interior/Vinyl Paint for mine, but they look just like yours. I cleaned the surface before spraying, but it still seems like it will peel off, if a scratch breaks through the paint.

What did you use on the panels?

Well the eclipse that i did it in has now been sold, but everything was holding up fine except that the drivers seat was fading where I was getting in and out all the time, same with the carpet. Easy fix, just respray it.

i used dye for the panels too i tried hard to scrape it with my nail and it wont flake or come off

Really. What brand of dye did you use? Did you soak the panels in the dye,, because it looks like you sprayed it on? How did you manage to spray it on?

I'm half tempted to try whatever you did, to avoid the peeling effect when it's scraped.

dupli -color fabric and vinyl dye....... i washed everything with soad and water i used dawn if tat matters.. then I just sprayed it on.. it comes in a can.. i got flat black so it looks OEM... i did 3 coats of each.. to be honest i'm not the best when doing stuff on my car i usally end up with a mess, this couldnt be easier... Just clean everything good and make sure its dry.. any auto parts store sells the stuff but i found it at wallmart for a dollar cheaper a can.. it took 2 cans to do 1 seat but I made it as dark as i could

In the first picture it looks like the pattern from the seat center is still visible through the dye? That's something I found when I did the seats in another car, but I was wondering how visible it is on yours? Also, do you find that it leaves the surface of the seat sort of "crunchy", or do you still have the stock feel of the cloth?

Yeah, that's the same stuff I used. At first I used alcohol to wipe the panels down and try to dry out any oils on the panels. But for some reason, some of the trunk panels peel a little (due to scratches), but they're ususally near an edge. It's probably an error on my part by not cleaning the edges good enough.

Anyway, it looks good. Are you doing the whole interior black?

its all black the middle in person is just as dark it just looks different because its not the same kinda fabric as the rest of the seat.. it was how you say "cruncky" I just got a boars hair brush and brushed the crap out of it, its fine now......

I'm doing everything behind the front seats black... putting black sude in where the cloth part is and dye the erry bottom peaice that has the speaker grill on it... as for the front... carbon fiber consol sides, arm rest, glove box and air bag cover...also debating on a carbon fiber dash cover but not one that goes on the whole dash.. right where the dash starts on the drivers side where its indented and goes over and down the side of the ac vents is all i want coverd.. i hope you know what i mean also going to be putting black carpet down...

the seats are just for the time being.. im going to finish them off in black leather with seude in the middle :thumb:

im thinking abouth doing this to mine (1G seats)... how long does the hole process take?? (front and rear seats).... and has anyone had bad experiences with it, like rubbing off onto your clothes??

-Mike

I did it to my back 2g seats.. Did a black and silver.. They dry super fast. The whole back seat 2 tone took me about an hour to do.. Easy too.

and there has been no problems since??..

is it a fairly simple process... i was thinking of doing a 2 tone on mine, but thought it would be near impossible

any pictures of yours??

Hey man, glad u finally able to put some pics on the forum. I'm thinking of dying my seats to, but just the middle section to stretch the tan/black theme. how many cans did you consume per seat?

Ill upload a better one later it was dark out.. Turn your monitor brightness all the way up

Livid, did you just use masking tape around the parts that you dyed for that effect, and if so, is there any bleed because of the tape not sticking well to the fabric? What kind of tape did you use? I played around a little since my back seat was out while I was test-fitting my fiberglass speaker box, and duct tape seemed to work the best for me.

Also, on a related note, does anyone know how to remove the headrests on a 1g car? Mine are the ones that are flush with the seat back and they don't seem to just retract out or anything.

Wow, I think you just changed my mind from getting seats in better condition to just dying the existing ones. Thanks!

I used clear packaging tape to do mine.. This way you can see through the tape and make sure you're aligning it perfectly.. No bleeding occured. Just make sure you spray from at least 12 to 18 inches away. I also covered the rest of the seat with rags to stop overspray. Since you're painting fabric and not plastic or something smooth you dont really have to worry about bleeding or dripping, it dries quickly. The best part is if you make a mistake or it does bleed you can just spray over it with another color and it's as good as new. You'll notice how precise you can get it when you see the pics.

I bought a can of Duplicolors vinyl and upholstery "paint" yesterday.

I tested it out on a visor that was broken off in a tragic automatic seat belt accident.

When I went out there today and checked on it, it was very crunchy and stiff.

I don't want my entire interior to be crunchy like that, so does anyone have a method to smoothing out the seats after they have dried?

n2orbit said earlier in the thread that he scrubbed at it with a horsehair brush to soften it up again, which would be the experience that I had when I dyed the carpet in one of my old cars. I also like using those $.99 fingernail brushes that you can pick up by the register at auto parts stores sometimes when I am trying to work something in to fabric or scrubbing at it. Might give that a try.

you just need to run something over it. I vaccumed everything and it turned soft.

yea you just need to get the clumped excess dye out to make it soft.

Let me know how the dyed plastics hold up, id like a all black interior (who doesnt) and it would be WAY cheaper to just dye it.
