Trying to wire this up but the plug i found in a junkyard that fits my saturn alternator has a brown wire and a brown w/ white line on the other wire. In the following write up he lists these directions on wiring....

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-electrical-wiring/272646-saturn-alternator-swap.html

Wiring is pretty straight forward, the large yellow wire goes to the F(black) wire on the saturn connector and the small black wire goes to the L(black w/ white stripe) on the saturn connector.

Im sure its obvious that the solid brown wire goes to the yellow wire on the stock harness and the brown w/ white goes to the solid black wire on the stock harness correct?

I just wanted to make sure with a second opinion.

anyone?

Should i ignore the colors off the saturn plug i have to just follow the letters stamped next to them and wire it to my 1g harness?

You only need to connect two wires. Call JayRacing and ask which go to which. I used the harness they sell off their site so there was just red, black, and brown. Red went unused, brown went to the stock black/white stripe, and the solid black went to the stock yellow wire. Hope this helps!

You are going to have to run the field wire (F) from a switched 12v source and not the stock wire on the 1g harness. If not, you will hear the alt humming when the car is turned off and it will kill your battery overnight. Ask me how I know. I guess not everyone has this problem somehow, but you will know when you hear it humming...

I will have to confirm which wire when I get home. I just spliced into the fuel pressure solenoid circuit on the firewall, since it only gets 12v when the key is on. (and for 5 sec after the car cuts off IIRC)

I didn't know the 1gs had to have an ignition 12volts to the plug. Thought it was only the 2g's. If I run th L wire to a 12volt source where do my black and yellow wires go from the original plug?

This is the info I collected on my 2G. You will have to look up the circuit diagram for you 1G, in the service manual.

I looked up the alt circuit diagram on page 116 in the Electrical book, for the 97-99 DSMs.

For the 4-pins on the alt. connector.

Red – 12v Constant Source
Black/Yellow – Metering of Voltage
Green – Pin 41 on the ECU – Voltage Regulator FR
White – Pin 33 on the ECU – Voltage Regulator G

From the Saturn Alternator Schematics
http://www.6bolt.com/Pics/sat_alt.pdf

F – Connected to a 12v Switched Power (7.5A)
L – Metering of Voltage

So for the Connection.
F goes to a new switched power 12v
L connects to the Black/Yellow wire.

Okay so the "F" wire off the plug should be wired to a 12v ignition power source.

So what do i connect to my original alternator harness? There are two wires off the stock plug, one wire is bigger than the other slightly and that wire is yellow, the other smaller one is black. Do i just leave one of these hanging and plug the other one with the "L" wire off the plug??

I don't think this matters but i already have a 4 gauge wire connected to the alternators main power that is connected to my battery.

I couldn't look under the hood of my car b/c its raining, but I got this info from the DSMLink thread that was an extremely informative how-to.

Correct.

Leave the yellow one hanging, since it is 12v constant and you will need a switched 12v source for the F wire. Wire the small black one to the L wire on the Saturn connector.

That's a good thing to do. Also, adding a couple extra 4ga ground wires in the engine bay helps the charging system. I added one from body of the Saturn Alt to the rad support, one from the pass strut tower to the battery and another from the IM to the drivers side strut tower area.

sweet, that clears up a lot. I need to put some more grounds in my engine bay. I have the jay racing alternator relocation kit using this saturn alternator i bought off ebay. I hope everything works out right when i turn the car on.

Two apologies for this post: 1. for thread-jacking, and 2. for not owning the right car. But I see a lot of discussion here about a topic suddenly dear to my heart! Thanks for bearing with me. I'm hoping I can learn something.

I'm having a color-code problem on my third Saturn alternator conversion on an MG. On this mechanically-managed engine, and a three-wire Saturn alternator pigtail, it's always been simple:

large red: to binding post on back of alternator - hence to battery.
smaller brown: to ignition warning light
black: not used.

This new Saturn alternator has a four-pin connector and pigtail pictured here. From left to right, looking at the pigtail connector:

large red marked "S"
smaller brown marked "F"
smaller brown/red marked "L"
smaller brown/white marked "P"

I have not seen any reference to this set of color codes on these connectors. Other references to four-pin connectors speak of a red wire (fine), a black wire, a white wire and a green wire. As shown above, I have only the red.

I'm presuming the large red does the same thing as on the three-pin connectors, and further that one of these other wires will go to my ignition warning light. I've never used a lead to a switched power source and cannot understand its purpose - why a switched source? My last Saturn alternator conversion does not hum when shut off, and it is still working well after five years and 30,000 miles.

On the four-pin connectors is one lead for a voltage meter? If so, which?

Many thanks in advance to anybody who can help. I've already read a lot of DSM posts on this subject, but nothing that quite fits.
