ok so i figured i would ask some of you AWD guys if you had ever thought about a way to disconnect the front drive axles and make it a straight RWD car. Is this possible or just a crazy idea.

The car would not last if one simply unhooked it. The rear-end can't handle having only the rear wheels driven.

GREAT minds think alike , came up with the idea a few weeks back. I've just ordered some junk front axles (to cut out the centers of) to switch mine over, but you have to have a welded center diff (or lock your gvr4 tranny into 4wd) to make it work correctly (according to the guy at a VERY reliable tranny shop). I was asking because I was afraid of doing damage to my tranny trying this. I will let you know how it goes once I get mine up and running. As for the response from zdrummer, he has a very valid angle that I hadn't thought of, but with the center diff welded and everything turning as if it were in 4wd I don't know if it would burn the diff up or not.

You need either a welded center diff or a viscous coupler eliminator (VCE).

The problem with this is weight distribution, there's too much weight in the front / not enough in the back; you'll spin a lot.
