i heard that some people have done this to pass smog, is it true and why? and are there any performance advantages, like higher octane?
thanks

alchohol doesn't lower octane rating.

The bonus to running alchohol is that it does not have any hydro carbons to burn thus, creating no emissions.

Don't use rubbing alchohol, goto Ace hardware or home depot, get a gallon or two of denatured.

yeah, i know it doesnt theoretically lower your octane, but buck for buck it might as well be the same thing. i was at work and typed the thing to get a point across rather than explain myself, so i apologize.

anyhow, what i meant by that is that since alcohol doesnt really burn like gasoline does you are in a sense "lowering your octane" by running less useable fuel.

fuel companies typically put about %10 ethanol in the gas for two reasons...
1. it helps keep the gasoline from freezing during the winter
2. it helps keep emissions in vehicles down

it kinda sucks that they do this though since your car doesnt really burn it as well and performance is hurt. ever get a "bad tank of gas" where your car just doesnt run right? well, you got a little more than %10 that time.

so, what you could do is run a bunch of it in your car when it comes time for inspection because it will help you pass and even though your car will run like crap for that tank of gas, it is only once a year and as long as you arent romping on the car it would be fine. there is no real performance advantage to it though since it doesnt really burn as well as gasoline does... come to think of it, i cant even say ive ever seen rubbing alcohol on fire for any extended period of time. i mean, if you really wanna test what im saying, take a teaspoon of gasoline and a teaspoon of rubbing alcohol and light them on fire. see which one burns the longest. i don't advise you doing this test though, in fact, dont do it, just take my word for it. if you do do it, im not responsible.
