RPMs dropped to 0 on the highway

I was driving on the highway going about 75mph, no hard driving just cruising. My RPMs just fell to 0 and the car backfired and just died. I pulled over, tried to turn it over and the car would turn over but not start. If any of you have AEM EMS (dsmlink might do it too?), when you try to turn the car on it always kinda hesitates then you give it gas and it turns on. Well I gave it some gas and it would just keep turning over but not starting.

I've never really worked on my car since I always had the shop work on it, and now I just want to fix it myself instead of sending it down there. I'm wondering if maybe my fuel pump died or maybe the coilpack died? Any other ideas, suggestions, or something I should look for?

Either of these might be causing your problem:
Bad alternator, dead battery, blown(disconnected) intercooler piping, disconnected bov-intake tube, intake pipe got disconnected, bad plugs, bad wires, bad coilpack.

I believe your problem is either a bad alternator, battery, or some intercooler piping blew off.

Check for that and let us know if that's your problem
 
The altenator was changed last week after it died in the parking lot at the shop. The battery still works since I can listen to the radio and do everything electrical. I'll go check the IC piping.

And I checked all my fuses (don't know if that would be a cause) and everything looked ok.
 
If the piping is ok you might want to check the alternator again. Especially if it's a remanufactured unit.
 
Just for the hell of it I tried starting the car. Three times the car started and the rpms went up to 500 then it died.

Could that still be the altenator?

In short, NO!! However if the battery is low (less than 12v) and the Alternator is not charging then it's possible but doubtful. A jump from a known fully charged battery would make it run until it dropped below the minimum required voltage and die when removed.

I am suspicious you have a failing fuel pump, relay, or the ECU. The fact it tries to start indicates you are getting spark at least for a while, have compression, not jumped time and bent valves. You may be able to pull fail codes and identify the problem. On the 1G there is a fuel pump test plug near the firewall which can be jumped to test the pump.

Let us know what you find and any fix.
