I changed my head gasket and had my head checked for cracks. After putting the head back on, my car idles exteremly rough with gas smoking out of the exhaust. I then checked the timing which was good. There is good compression and I am getting good spark in all cylinders. There are no CE lights. The only thing I can think of is bad timing, but the marks lined up. I am going to take the belt off and put it on again tomorrow... any other thoughts on what this could be?

It's whitish, but trust me it is gas. I may not really be burning gas, but you can smell it coming out of the exhaust.

I recently just got done with a head swap also... My car has been idling high... I went to the parts store and picked up some starting fluid. Take the can and check all the vaccuum hoses by spraying them in short blasts. Go from one end to the other for all vaccuum lines... if there is a leak significant enough to cause rough idle, it should rev the rpms a little higher when you spray the starting fluid.

Mine turned out being the pcv inlet in the intake manifold (2g head).

May not be the problem, as mine wasnt really smoking... but worth a try just in case you have a leak somewhere else...

I wouldnt go by the smell of exhaust gas as an indicator of whether or not your running rich. As a rule, just go by the color. White (water) Black (fuel) Blue (oil). How much smoke is rolling out of the exhaust? When most cars are started for the first time after sitting for a while, white smoke will generally come out of the exhaust but its usually just condensation that is gone within a few minutes. If you getting larger clouds of white smoke, someone didnt do a very good job of checking your head. Did you have reason to believe that there where cracks on the head, such as that you would get from severe overheating before your car died, or did you have it checked just as a precaution?

I was burning coolant under boost, so I pulled the head to replace my head gasket and also had the head checked which was done by a good shop. And it isn't a little bit of smoke, it is a lot.

Today I drove the car. At about 1500 and up, the car runs much smoother but still smokes. I drove it till it warmed up, then parked. I had a cel after it warmed up, injector circuit malfunction. Also when I opened the hood, there was smoke coming from out of where my dip stick goes, my oil cap, and it seemed as if the outside of the turbo was smoking. I am loosing coolant. but it didn't seem like there was any in my oil. The only thing I can think of is a cracked head. Any help would be great, thanx!
