Hi,

I was driving my mom's 1998 Corolla VE recently, and I've been hearing a weird noise everytime I break. So, I inspected the caliper and break pads today, but when I took off the pads, the rotors seem very loose, so loose in fact, I believe I can remove them if the caliper wasn't in place. I previously thought that there were screws that held them in place. Furthermore, there are two holes facing me when I take off the wheel that looks like 2 screws are suppose to be there, but I checked the other side of the wheel and they also were loose and had no screws in the holes.

I was wondering if anybody knew if such rotors exists where no screws hold them in place, such as rear drums breaks.

Thanks a lot.
Ray

There are no screws holding my rotors in place. They just usually feel solit on our cars due to mass amounts of rust. Did you check the anti-rattle clip?

Most rotors aren't held in place by screws, they are simply sandwiched between the wheel and the hub assembly, and are held in by the lugnuts. The screw holes you saw were there to help pry the rotor off if it were to get rusted on the hub - you'd drive a few grade 10 bolts in there with an impact wrench until the rotor is free.

There are always exceptions though, but this is generally the case...

What I believe your discribing is a full floating rotor set up on your front brakes. Some manufactures with this set up made screws on the rotor so it will not fall off on the assyembly line. Other than that, the screws really dont serve any other perpose (other than stripping when you try to remove them to pull off the rotor. : )) So I doubt that the missing screws is the cause of your braking noise. Just like the VelocitaPaola said the rotors are pressed down by the lug nuts.
