Hello all, my machinist noticed a problem with my valve spring retainers. He saw the outer edge chewed up around about half of my valve spring retainers. Some just had tiny knicks, some were ok... It would appear that the roller wheel from the rocker arm is hitting the retainer. I don't have a picture but I tried to draw the problem so let's try to keep the laughter to a minimum. Just in case you can't read the pictures, the words in the first picture are, "RETAINER", "VALVE STEM", & "INTERFERENCE FROM ROCKER WHEEL". The second picture says "VALVE STEM" & "RETAINER". I tried to draw the outer edge chewed up. I have supertech dual valve springs w/ titanium retainers and 1mm oversized vlaves. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, feel free to chime in. Thanks in advance.

What kind of valve/cam setup are you running? Did you blow a timing belt? Was the damage all fresh, or accumulated? How long had it been run? Are the spring retainers stock? Was there visible scuffing to the rollers? Had the head been given a valve job previously? I'd not have thought contact was possible.

The cams were HKS 272's. The valves, all I know is they were Stainless steel 1mm oversized. The spring retainers are Supertech titanium retainers. Not sure if the damage is fresh. There was visible scuffing on the rollers but they still felt smooth. I'm sure the head has been given a valve job. It's a fully ported race head. I did not blow a timing belt. I'm thinking maybe get different keepers for the retainers.

So, still on the original inserts so that the cutting of fresh seats has allowed the stems and thereby the retainers to rise higher toward the rockers? Who did the last head job? Ask them if they allowed for this, and explain that now you'd like them to do it correctly. For free.

Any damage to the rollers will not only proceed to get worse, but will transfer to the cam surfaces and destroy them as well.

I know the head is a fully ported race head. So, I would think that there was a vlave job done on the head. I bought the car from someone who works at AMS so naturally all the work was done there and the engine had about 2K miles on a rebuild when I bought it and the engine and trans went out after about 1K miles of daily driving to work. Cam lobes ground down a 1/32" on the #1 cylinder, cracked piston (#1 cylinder), oil squirter in the pan (#1 cylinder), the rest of the pistons having deep scrapes in them, and now this.

how is the issue? izzit resolved yet? :)
having the same prob with skunk2 tuner series valve spring + retainer here during installation (1g stock head).
