Reworked Crank

Anyone ever used an autozone reman crank? comes with matching bearing etc. in need of a crank and i get a good discount at Autozone. Just Looking for some tech advice on this one. seems legit. anyone with experience would be nice.

its a 4g63 turbo 7 bolt out of a 96 talon tsi awd. chewed up the prev crank but the block is fine thank god.

Inspect the crank as soon as you get it home.

Check the rod throws and see if the balls have been removed and then had set screw put in place.

Check the rod journals for welding pits across the bearing surfaces. I would be leery of any crank I find this on, it means the rod was badly spun, so when the reman company worked it, they welded it up then ground it back down.

Also check the thrust face of the crank, it has to be smooth and flat, if you feel a groove, send it back.

Thanks bogus. ive been kinda weary about buying it. i would have to wait a few days for it come in. everyone else i talk to tells me to just find a decent oem crank and have it sent to a machine shop.

the autozone ones come micro polished matching bearings etc. so it seems pretty good. thats just alot of money to play with. ill order it sometime soon and just do all my measurements on the counter there at the store.

the other problem is to figure out which to order, there is 2 7 bolt choices, one with thrust washers and one with thrust bearings.

i didnt tear this engine apart, it was torn down when i got it, so all the original bearings are gone.

Its more of the fact that i would hate to have to get it and it go to waste. i dont have money to waste

A 7 bolt crank is a 7 bolt crank.

The difference is if it is a saddle bearing block or a split thrust block.

Post a pic of both the #3 main of the block and of the girdle. We can figure out from there what one you have

How much is the price? I pulled one from a junayard for 35 bucks and had it polished. Looks new. I wouldn't feel safe with AutoZone bearings on a high performance car.

for me its like 160$

the problem with pulling one is finding one. i go to the yards here all the time and rarely do i ever see one.

Why would you not feel safe with auto zone crank bearings?

It is not AZ grinding the crank and making the bearings.

AZ buys the crank kit from a reman, and loads it on the shelf, same with Advance and O'Reilly's

Most the time the bearings you get will be Federal Mogal, Clevite, or King. Whats wrong with any of those brands?

I install mainly King bearings in my builds.

JHicks, FWIW, before you even leave the store with the crank, open the bok and confirm that it is the crank you need, there is an error is the Standard Crankshaft catalog. The part number listed, for the 7 bolt. Even tho the Part number listed in the parts store computer, and what is stamped on the box. When you open the box, it will not even be a Mitsu crank.
