Hey guys. Going to replace my lifters with the revised set. Found a tool in my cornwell catalog that mounts on the head and pushes down on the valve spring to remove the cam followers. on vfaq.com they demonstrate with a crow bar to pry the cam followers out, dont you risk scoring either the followers or the cam lobes by doing it that way?

I always wear laminate safety glasses and kevlar body armor when I do mine since they'll shoot a mile and resemble bullets way too much for my taste! Did I mention the hockey mask?

I put my hand over the area as best I could... eh. Almost lost a finger.

Is there a link for the part online?

I mean if it works, people might be interested.

I used one of those special tools when I replaced mine. I'd have to say it made the job easier.

yeah I dont really like dodging projectiles either, but I almost always wear safety glasses, its a habit from school.

I just didnt like the idea of using a screw driver to pry them out. With this tool I will be able to replace the lifters without removing the cams and without scratching anything. So you tore down the entire front cover all I will have to do is pull off the valve cover. The tool is a universal valve spring compressor but states the specific brands it can be used on in the snapon catalog.

Im just sayin that to get to the lifters you dont need to touch the valve springs at all, they are on the complete other side of the rocker arm. removing the cams is about the only way to get to em i think. I had my head already off for a rebuild so i didnt have to take apart anything extra, I also just pulled em out with my fingers or a pair of pliers since youre going to be ditchin em anyway

If you relieve pressure from the valve spring the cam followers pop right out as do the lifters. This way you dont have to take the cams out. :thumb:

That just seems like a lot of extra effort when just taking the cams out and retiming it would be easier to me, and if you had the tool to maintain your timing for cams swaps and things like that it would be WAY easier. Also dont forget to soak your revised lifters in oil

I apologize I was thinking I would be able to use the tool around the cams so I could replace the lifters without taking out the cams. After looking at enough pictures of the head the spring looks like its too far underneath the cam for the tool to accomplish that. Guess I will just end up retiming everything.
