Tomorrow I am going to replace the power steering pump on my GSX. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions to make things go as smoothly as possible?

Also, could some DSM guru tell me what PS pump will work on what year model and engine? for example, the junk yard pulled a PS pump from a (they say) 1990 eclipse, however that pump doesnt match up with the one i have in MY 1990 eclipse. i suspect they pulled it from a 1.8L, even though i told them 2.0L. This is a working example of why they should let you pull the parts yourself. alas, i digress, what pumps are interchangeable between 1g cars?

^^^:thumb:. If it has a ribbed pulley it is for a 95 on up. All the 90>94s wer set up for Vbelts.

Make sure you tighten the bolt that keeps tension on the belt. I didn't have mine tight enough when I changed the belt and it slipped and made some squawking noises and didn't turn very well.

Make sure you have the Chilton/Haynes manual first, that book should be your DSM BIBLE that stays in your car ALWAYS. But for real, I know some of it can be vague and confusing, but it really does help.....
I have both, they've helped me a lot. It has the method on how to bleed the power steering system in there. I didn't even know you had to bleed the system until I read the manual.

I cant seem to get the pressure hose (the one on top held on by one large bolt) off the pump. obviously i took the bolt off, but now it wont come off. im afraid of pulling too hard on it because i dont want to break anything. should i remove the brackets mounting the suction hose then try to remove the pressure hose?

Alright, I got that top hose off. However, the funky little plug came off also. Heres a general sit rep: I exchanged the pump i bought that was for a 91-94 eclipse, and got the correct version now. So, now I have the right PS pump. However, the only problem I have now is that tube with the plug thing in it. Let me try and describe it 9if you have messed with the PS pump, the hopefully you will understand what i am talking about):

There is a bolt on top holding down the pressure hose. At the end of that hose is a metal fitting that goes around the threads that attach the bolt. This is what i am referring to. on my car, the threads and all came off with the hose, where as on the new pump, the threads and that whole assembly stayed on the pump. Man, its frustrating trying to describe it because i dont know what those pieces are called. if anyone can figure out what im babbling about, pleas tell me how to get the threaded top piece out of the metal assembly that attaches to the hose.

dammit...

Ok, ive done some research, now let me clarify: the banjo bolt on my original PS pump came off and is still in the line that it connected to the pump. On the new pump I bought, the banjo bolt remains on the pump itself, and seems determined to stay that way. I would rather use the banjo bolt on the new pump rather than the old bolt, but I cant seem to get the old one out from that top PS line. the bolt should just pop out, but i havnt had any such luck thus far. Any tips on getting that banjo bolt out of its housing on the upper PS line?

Are you saying the banjo bolt that usually stays in the pump pulled out and is stuck in the fitting???

Does this pic help any?
PS Not my pic but came from a helpful member on here.

it spins freely in the fitting. that picture is helpful, because the part that is supposed to stay in the pump is no longer in the pump. thats the only problem i have encountered right now.

Upon closer inspection, my banjo bolt looks nothing like the one in the pic. mine doesnt have that large hexagonal base, its just the top part that is stuck in the fitting on the hose, and the bottom part which looks to be another threaded part for a bolt. its totally f'd up. we got the bolt partly out of the fitting by hitting it, then it got stuck on another lip that was on the bolt. its like someone previously used a wrong-sized banjo bolt, and just jammed it on there. any alternatives are welcome, but it looks like ill just have to force the bolt out of the fitting. unfortunately, i also run the risk of that fitting leaking now that weve been messing with it. damn this is a mess :notgood:

Another powersteering hose may be in order if its that screwed up already. If used is alright there is some in the classifieds here or check ebay.

Im going to attach a paint picture of what is going on since my camera is down for now. the gray is the fitting on the end of the upper ps hose, and the red is the (aftermarket i suspect) banjo bolt that seems to have been forced into the fitting. the teal is the upper ring seal, and the part of the bolt that i can get out of the fitting by hammering on it. lower lip with the blue is the lower part of the bolt that i cannot seem to get out of the fitting. the bolt looks nothing like the picture posted above, and the upper ps hose fitting certainly doesnt just "slide" off the bolt like it should. any thoughts on getting that damn bolt out without harming that hose fitting?

I like the use of paint very creative. Unfortunately I think Daveed is right a new one may be in order, especially if its not the right bolt to begin with.

This is easy, just take the banjo stud out of the new pump and screw in the one that is stuck on your pipe - same thing that happend to me. The smaller banjo stud in the pump screws out, leaving that big half of the stud still in the pump. Put a screwdriver through the banjo stud and tap it with a hammer - it will come loose and screw out.
