Hi, my names Mike and I seem to have ran into a bit of a bind.

My '96 Eclipse GS-T I believe has crank walk, the crank shaft pulley wobbles very badly, and it ended up throwing off the timing in my car, as well as numerous other major issues now to the point the car does not run hardly at all. It stutters, and backfires, and I am to the point I haven't even started it in over a year now.

I am wanting to know if it is possible for me to replace the old crank shaft and all the other necessary parts, while building the motor like I wanted to do in the first place. Or if I should just start over with a fresh motor and work from there? Any information would be appreciated beyond belief as I don't have alot of spare time being in the military. Thanks again.

Mike

You should start over with a new motor. There is a 4G63 that isnt prone to crankwalk called the 6 bolt that came in the first generation pre-1992 GSX/GST or into the Galant VR4. Id invest in one and build it up before installing.

I found a 90-94, 1G 4G63 on Ebay. Do these motors swap straight in without any mounting modifications, or need of a new computer? Here is the link to the motor I found, doesn't look to be in that good of condition, but I only know a little about mechanics at this point, could someone look at it and tell me what they think?

Let's try and get more informantion before suggesting that someone go buy a completly new motor. The crank pulley is know for having problems and seperating causing it to throw belts and from time to time hit the frame. 100.00 dollars is a lot less than a new motor.

When you say "tossed the timming belt" do you actually mean the accesory belts. I have never seen a DSM throw a T belt they usualy just snap if they do fail and that has nothing to do with crankwalk. Let's get that far before yelling out crankwalk.

It is not a 2G or 1G thing with motors. It is a 7 bolt or 6 bolt thing. If I had crankwalk on a 7bolt and I was running a stock or lightly modded DSM, I'd get another 7 bolt. If it was moderately modded, I'd get a 6 bolt.

First find out if you REALLY have crankwalk, in my opinion crankwalk is way overrated and everytime someone has a problem with their engine they think it is crankwalk. If you do have it, don't try to fix that engine, it's gone. You might spend $2000 to fix it and then 3 months later, it might crankwalk again. If you want to put a 6 bolt engine in a 7 bolt, you'll need a lot of other parts. Let me add that ANY motor can crankwalk. If you don't want the hassle of putting a 6 bolt, stay with a 7 bolt.
