Ask Me, Virginia
I'd like to remove my underhood insulator but I am worried it might damage the paint.

I have gotten away with this on every car I own but could swear I heard this being a no-no on a 1g, and that the paint will get damaged.

Thoughts?

Thank you!

Not at present, no. I could always VHT it, then bake it. Lower exhaust manifold heat shield is in place. What do you say?

Do you have anything covering up the exhaust manifold (heat shield)?

Personally I've always had it on, on top of the exhaust manifold heat shield. I know that with time the paint will bubble/fade from heat. I don't think the VHT by itself will be enough, but like I said I've never done it that way myself.

What's your reason for taking it off? I know there are companies that make insulation that you can cut to form to replace older ones and it's thinner. Like this: http://www.designengineering.com/ca...nd-barrier/under-hood-thermal-acoustic-lining

I just like to keep things simpler and give heat a better path to escape on the cheap. If I am taking a chance with VHT alone, then I'd better not chance it.

Thanks for your thoughts.
