Removing head

So I have gotten everything pulled on my head trying to get it off (2G) and its broken free from the headgasket and everything, but the bottom far right exhaust stud is hitting a metal bracket when I pull it up. I thought it was something to do with the exhaust manifold hitting it so I pulled that, but the stud still hits. What is the trick to getting around it? Thanks!

You could always pull the stud.

How would I go about pulling the stud?

It doesn't appear to be the power steering bracket itself, but what it is bolted to, it is bolted to the lock in several spots.

There's a bracket that bolts to the block for the power-steering pump. It's the only bracket that you could be speaking of. It's 3 14mm bolts. Just remove it assuming you have the water-pipe removed.

Upper timing mount? It's a GVR-4, right? Just jack up the motor from the oil pan and take the timing-side mount off. It's the big box steel thing that curves around the valve cover, right?

It is a GVR-4, but at some point the motor was swapped from a 97 tsi awd.

I didn't know the entire water pipe was supposed to be removed, but I will pull it off and see if the head will clear everything, unless someone else has an easier way?

I apologize for the picture quality, I can get more if needed. Its that far bolt that hits the little metal piece above it. If the head could be moved about 1/2" towards the passenger side it looks like it would clear it.

It looked like more than three bolts to me, it looks like it has about half a dozen, a couple of which are under the water pipe and one possibly behind the water pump.

Ok, ! I've pulled so many of these heads/motors, had mine for almost 8 years, etc... but that picture is making my head hurt. I can't get it orientated in my head.

Yes, much. Yeah, that's for the motor-mount brace, and the power-steering pump bracket it bolted to it. It seems like you're just going to have to remove it.

I have a 2g so I don't have any of that; even though I have a 6-bolt bottom-end. I've only pulled motors and heads on 2gs. Weird, isn't it? You'll need a 1g/GVR-4 guy to tell answer that.

I'm surprised you didn't remove all that anyway when you were taking your timing-belt off.

Well I bought the car with bent valves and the timing belt area already pulled apart, all I had to do was loosen the tensioner up and it came right off. The VIN on the block tells me the bottom end is from a 97 tsi awd, but the head doesn't look like its a 7-bolt does it? Think they could have used the stock head, or just the motor mount brackets, etc?

Yeah you will have to remove both of those brackets. 12/14/17mm get to it.
