so i'm in the process of removing my head to get an idea of where all my compression has gone. I've unbolted the exhaust manifold, removed the timing belt, etc etc. Everything is clear, and the head is ready to come off (loose already) except I missed a couple of the bolts (maybe nuts) on the under side of the intake manifold. I can get a 14mm socket on it with some trouble, but there no way in hell I can get a socket wrench onto the socket. I've tried every extension, u-bend, and wrench that I can find and none of the solutions have any room to work with.

BTW it's a 95 Turbo DOHC. Anyone found a trick to removing these bottom bolts?

P.S. So far i've only disconnected the fuel rail / injectors from the head, it is still attached from the rear and kind of gets in the way, but even if I remove this I don't see any way of getting to these bolts.

Yeah, the bolt's on the back of the head are very hard to get off. I had a friend turn a wrench standing on the passenger side (reaching behind the intake manifold) while I held the wrench on from the driver's side to break the bolts, then it should come off fairly easily. It's easier if you remove the battery (didn't mention). I also have the ratcheting closed end wrenches, which aren't good for breaking the bolts, but are great for removing them, can't belive I ever lived without them. I did this about 2 weeks ago and I didn't bother putting them back in.

Somewhat funny story:
I replaced my head gasket because we thought it was blown. Funniest thing is, after it was replaced, we found out that the turbo coolant line had a penhole leak that was spraying the head right where the gasket is (and where we couldn't find it), making it seem exactly like a blown headgasket. I almost died laughing when I discovered this. I wasted about 3 hours for about 10 minutes worth of work and still had to do the 10 minutes worth of work. You live, you learn. Check out this pic I took.

hah that would really suck.

My cars getting 30-40 psi in all cylinders, there's oil covering various externam parts of the engine. If I didn't know better i'd say the sealing end of the head is warped very badly. Infact I don't know better, only time will tell.

I guess I should just bite the bullet and remove some more wires / battery / fuel rail entirely out of the way, etc.

Actually (and I should have mentioned this) you are supposed to remove the engine's wiring harness before you remove the intake (you may have).

If you're simply pulling the head off there is no need to remove the intake manifold from the head. Remove the stay (bracket) which connects the bottom of the intake manifold to the block and baam...the intake manifold will come out with the head when you go to pull the head out.

Or....if you want to do it the harder way. Get on a long sleeve shirt and stand where the driver side strut mount is. Use a regular socket wrench and come from underneath where the hoses run from the t/b to the t-stat housing. you'll end up scraping your fore arm up like a bi*** but you can get all of the bolts like this.

I think all of us are talking about the same thing. In order to take the head off with the manifolds still attatched you must remove 2 14mm bolts that hold the manifold to a bracket attatched to the firewall (I believe).

The bracket mounts to the engine block.

I found the easiest access was from under the car. The AC compressor may get in the way though, this was after I removed mine. If you don't want to go that route, you could try a box end wrench with an extension (tubing, dowel, etc.) taped to it. We've done that before as well, attacking it from the sides. It's easiest to remove when everything is out of the way (injectors, coils, etc.) but is still possible with everything on it.

I have never seen an under belly of a 2G but on 1Gs, you need to remove the down pipe and stick you hand through the opening and feel your way around using the shortest 12mm wrench you can find.

All you have to do is loosen the bolts with a 12mm wrench, then remove the battery so you have more room to work, then just remove with fingers. Its gonna take about 5 min per bolt tho. If you think taking it off is fun, wait till u go to put it back on ROFL

wow when i pull the heads, i dont take either manifold off. I just unbolt the dp from the o2 housing, unbolt the turbo from the exhaust manifold (might as well replace all these gasket while im in there) pull the timing belt, un hook the other small junk, crawl under and unbolt the bottom bolt in that A brace on the intake manifold, unbolt head and lift right out.
