St. Catharines,
I just took out my 1997 eagle talon tsi, i just put the new engine and transmission in. The transmission has a ipt rebuild kit, high stall converter and shift kit. I took it out and seems like its not shifiting out of first, my speed is around 50 and my rpm are at 2500. The transmission fluid is over filled, i also couldnt get it out of reverse the one time when i went to leave my drive way. because the fluid is overfilled could this cause it?

If your speed is around 50mph and your rpm's are 2500, you're not in first gear. Does it never leave out of that gear? Mine did that when I put my new one in. It went into "safe mode" because it's seeing that something is wrong.

ok.. well i have no reverse gear now. I dont feel or see the car shifting by watching the rpms.. it has an ipt shift kit, red spring in, it should shift hard, instead im feeling nothing.

Sounds like the transmission is in limp mode. I had the same exact problem with the stock transmission.

Check the TCU for loose plugs.

Do u have a CEL?

I doubt over filling the trans will cause this. The car isn't in 1st, when the car goes in limp mode it means that it has found a problem that needs to be fixed, so it stays in 3rd to help save the transmission from the problem. It can be as simple as a loose connector on the TCU to a blown transmission.

i think you might be right, i dont see the car shifting, and it seems a little harder to take off so the car is prob is 3rd gear. Will the ecu throw an error code? i have dsm link but their are no cel codes present. I checked all plugs on the transmission yesterday to make sure they were in the correct spot and to make sure they were secure.

When i originally took the car out i drove it down the st. parked it and came home i backed out of my driveway 3 other times before that again only to drive down the st. then when i went 2kilometers and went to reverse after leaving my buddy's, it had no reverse.

I also tryed shifting manually from 1st 2nd and drive to see if the gears would change and they didnt.

Definitely in limp mode.

You need to check the Transmission Control Unit's (TCU) harnesses, not the plugs on the tranny. Have you ran an auto tranny with the dsmlink ecu installed before this problem? If you are using a manual trans ecu, somebody confirm this please, I believe that you can't get any auto tranny DTCs.

ive checked the plugs their fine, their not loose, and ive done no interiror work to damage any wire. I had dsm link installed before this. With the car running sometimes reverse will engage for couple secs but then go right back out again. i had no problem with the tcu before i replaced the transmission, the transmission itself was damaged. The ecu is throwing no transmission codes.

It is not a TCU problem. You are in limp mode because there is something wrong with the trans and the TCU is putting you in limp mode. You have valve body issues preventing reverse from working.

ok well i found that i had one of the tranny plugs hooked up wrong, it was hooked to the o2 sensor. I fixed that but the car still a no go. I get reverse sometimes as well as drive. i can feel it engage then will go right back out again.

Sorry for the late response.

The ECU doesn't have to throw a CEL, mine didn't.

The no Reverse part is kind of weird, in limp mode you can use R, maybe it has something to do with your reverse gear?

its not just reverse though, it does the same thing in drive to. like if it engages i begin to drive then the car just starts to rev and goes no where.

u have some kind of problem inside the transmission. Take it to get looked at, most places charge around $100 buck to look at it, see what they have to say...

Mine is doing the same thing only with reverse. It works when I first start driving it, but after a pull or two, the reverse doesn't engage. It just revs up and never "catches". Let me know what you figure out.

problem solved, their wasnt enough tranny fluid. Next issue.. after the car is driven for awhile and the car heats up i notice that when im coming to a stop the transmission drops down into first really hard, i feel a hard jolt before i stop. But if i have overdrive off the car doesnt do it. could this be a speed sensor. But if it is why would it only do it if its hot?

PCS trims probably. If you have the translab kit it's gonna be kindof hard on the downshift into 1st.
