Rear View Mirror Glue...

So as some of you may know i have this subwoofer. It is really ugly and it hates to see itself in a mirror. So it knocked my rear view mirror off 3 weeks after i put it in. I bought the most expensive permatex epoxy glue i could find at autozone for mirrors. I let it set for a day, nice warm day. then 4 days later plop. Getting rid of the sub is not an option. complaining about hearing my car when you will never hear it is not an option either . (should have said please and thanks in there somewhere, i know. please, thanks)

Anyone have a better glue idea? or is there an option to maybe screw/bolt an aftermarket mirror to the roof that comes down (like my 85 vette, all i had to do was tighten the screw every 1 million bumps, about once a week, I kept a baby stubby screw driver in the glovebox for that)

And When i say fall off, I mean the little metal peice glued to the windshield falls of, of course with everything else attached to it. it not the screw backing out holding it to the metal peice.

My windshield is naked now.

you can try some JB-weld or something equivalent. I'd make sure to prep the surface of both the metal piece and the windshield very well by scuffing with medium grit sandpaper then swabbing the area clean with alcohol. Be careful not to scuff any part of your windshield that will be visible outside of that little metal piece cause that would not look good. To be safe, i would tape off the windshield area around the small portion you will be sanding. Once the JB-weld cures this should never come off as standard JB has a tinsel strength of 3,960 psi.

If your subwoofer still knocks your mirror off then i think you have bigger problems like worrying about your bass disconnecting your brain stem from your medulla oblongata with that kind of resonant power.

Cool. I actually some JB laying around, so i may give that a try. By medium grit, you mean like 220? And JB weld is stronger as a glue than any other readily available 2 stage epoxy?

Do not sand your windshield or use jb weld. It will look like shit from the outside. Take the metal piece out of the mirror. Sand the side that will be glued to the glass. Prep the glass by cleaning it very well with alcohol. Let try for at least 5 minutes. Use the epoxy specifically made for glass and glue the metal piece to the windshield. Let it dry overnight. Reinstall your mirror. No amount of bass will cause the issue you are having if you do it properly.

I had the same thing happen to me and nothing I used lasted for more than a week. I finally broke down and took it to an auto glass shop. Cost me about $20 and my mirror is still on the windshield 5 years later.

^^This. Or, buy some better quality glue. I believe 3M makes it, and 3M is always good stuff. Did the Permatex come with the cleaner/primer? Most RVM glues come with this, and if you dont use it, the adhesive will fail in short time.
Consider yourself lucky. In my first DSM, I had 3 Fosgate 12" DVC subs with a BD1000 monoblock and when my mirror came off, it took the glass with it in about a 3" radius. If your mirror is dancing around with the bass, why not leave the screw loose so that you can just slide the mirror off when youre blasting and just put it back on when youre not?? Just a suggestion, though not the safest idea...

Well mister, that all depends on who does the work. Maybe you would make it look like crap, but not if i was on the job doing it as i have been doing custom fabrications for over 10 years. I'm not saying it would be better or worst than the standard epoxy option that he has already tried, he was simply looking for other ideas, and i gave him one that could possibly work better for him.

220 would be just fine, trust me... JB will hold great as long as the surface is prepared properly and will look oem as long as your neat with your prep work and install. i'm not saying it will be better than the special epoxy they make specifically for this job, but it is an idea as you were looking for. If you want to conduct an experiment for the hell of it to check it's hold strength, find an old mirror or piece of glass to simulate your windshield and then get get two coins to simulate the metal tab of the mirror base. Prepare one coin as you would the metal tab for the mirror with an epoxy or other mentioned adhesive and the other coin with the JB weld then adhere both coins to the mirror or glass that you found, and let harden. Then see which one is harder to get off.

Ok this is the one i used:
Permatex/Extreme rear view mirror professional strength adhesive (81840) | Mirror Adhesive | AutoZone.com

maybe ill try the 3m version next...

And this is my usual prep proceedure for sticking things together:
Scrape everything using a razor. (window and metal peice)
Rub with acetone
Scrape again
Rub with acetone
Dry
Rub with Denatured alcohol
Wait for air dry (alcohol takes no time at all on a warm sunny day.
Applied the activator towlette as per directions
applied glue, one drop.
hold to windshield for a minute
let it set without the mirror for hours.

put mirror on
turn sub on
watch it fall
repeat

I kinda like the mirror not being there, I might keep it that way. I just kinda like to see what cars are directly behind me...
