The car is a '92 Eagle Talon w/automatic transmission.

I need to replace the seal in the transmission for the rear output shaft. I've read different posts saying everything from it can be put in from the outside to you have to remove the entire transmission and put in from the inside.

Obviously it can't be put in from the outside since it has a lip and I've already bent one new seal trying to get it in. One post says you can unbolt the transmission and slide it part way out to get the seal in. Another post I've read says to remove the end cover on the tranny, pull the viscous coupler, let the output shaft locking ball fall out and pull the output shaft. Well I got the cover off and removed a few things. I had to remove the idler gear to get things out like the bearing supports, the center diff, the viscous coupler (which had no snap ring like some of the posts I've read said, BTW). And of course the last piece I need to remove, the front output shaft, will not come out. It has a gear that engages the diff and tapered bearings on the front and back. The back bearing is what is causing the front output shaft not to come out. It catches on the diff gear.

So, am I going to have to drop the tranny for a seal that was said to have been a 5 minute job? (My own fault for listening to a FWD guy)

Also the rear output shaft I have doesn't look like the one in this picture:

It actually doesn't have the groove the ball goes in, so I guess that's a relief that I didn't lose the ball. Automatics must not have any balls, right?

Thanks for the help.
