I was replacing the backing plates for my AWD talon the other day and noticed the ones i got from the classifieds were for a FWD turbo (my mistake) so the seat were the hub goes is much smaller diameter. i was wondering since i already have the backing plates and cant find any other cars in scrap yards around here if i could cut the hole larger for my awd bearing and them drill the 4 mounting holes. theoretically the backing plate sees no load untill the handbrake is pulled and that is when the car is at rest so it shouldnt be too bad should it? also if any one has a hub out and can meaure the ouside diameter of the seat then i could start cutting away once i find out if it safe or not. also the reason behind replacing the backing plates is the guy who owned the car before me grinded them down, cant figuer out why yet, to the point where i cant put the retainer pin in on one side or else i would just use my own on the car.

thanks ahead.

Probably not recommended to modify the fwd ones, unless you can be really precise with the new hole. Issue is that backing plate is what centers the parking break assembly in the disk/drum. If your hole isn't properly centered, your parking break shoes are going to wear/run on the drum unevenly, possibly causing damage.

I do know you can buy new ones from the dealer, I think I paid around $45 ea US from mitsubishiparts.com

i figuered the centering was going to be the major problem with it but wanted some other feedback about it. also i didnt realise they were priced that low. hopefully i can get them soon and find a buyer locally for my parts LOL, thanks for the input

I'm also looking to replace a damaged backing plate on an 95 awd rearend that I'm about to bolt up to my spyder. The dealer here said it'd be a ridiculous $80 for one side so I went to mitsubishiparts.com and for "backing plate" it only shows for 96-99 rear drum and under "awd parking brake" it just shows the shoes. Can someone help me out here? Once I do get the backing plate will the shoes and hardware from the fwd subframe bolt on to the awd backing plate? Thanks.

I ordered new backing plates for my awd swap, think they were $40-45 a piece from Mitsu parts. I can dig up the part #'s when I get a chance but don't have them available at the moment. Are yours the vented or the typical solid rear rotor?

Almost everything is the same between fwd & awd except the parking break levers are different & the parking break shoes themselves have a different part #. Though when I compared my fwd shoes to the new awd ones they looked the same (thought I wasn't super thorough.)

The part number would be great since I can't seem to find that specific part on their site. Trying to ask them about it through their messaging system is slow and painful too.

The rotors are solid which I'm glad so I can reuse my drilled/slotted rotors. I suppose next time I go to the shop I'll take the fwd ebrake parts off and just see if they work.

I finished bolting up the rearend and driveshaft today so I'm excited to get this li'l hurdle over with so I can focus on droppin the motor in and gettin this awd spyder back on the street. :D

Part # are:

RH Backing Plate: MB950210
LH Backing Plate: MB950209

Other parts that are different from fwd to awd:

Parking Brake Pads: MR391631
RH Parking Brake Lever: 4600A155
LH Parking Brake Lever: 4600A154
