So, latly all the sudden, the car has been getting a P0300 code while driving, literally at random times. The weird thing is, if im cruising and all the sudden i get the code (light illuminates CEL, wideband reads 17.1 and the car starts puttering) if i shut off the car while driving, and simply start it back up, it goes away... but then it happens again 10, 15+ min later... whats the deal with that?! any ideas? it literally happens sparatically and randomly, i dont have to be WOT for this to happen

Samething happens to me except I get 9 codes instead of 1 first I tought it was my safc2 but its not its verry confusing and havent figured out the problem yet :/

Grrr... Idk what it could be.. i was reading around and some people were saying if you have a black top CAS it will fix the problem? i do have one of these, not currently installed on the car. The one thats on there now i belive is just silver (metal) i have a 6 bolt swap, any info regaurding a black top CAS? im not getting codes for a CAS tho..In ECMlink i noticed that checked is "Use non 95-96 style Cam Angle Sensor" do i have the wrong one installed??

Hmmm I dont kniw much about.the CAS I have a 7bolt mine doeaent have a cas just a cam sensor on the right under the cam gear but I just replaced that one :/ and still my car eighter dies running or just starts to back fire and studder when light is on untill the light goes off then start to run perfectly fine I think this hasent happened to many ppl because I made a post like this one a few days ago and have gotten some help thats helpful but not for my problem :/

The random misfire code is a common issue for 2g owners who use a 1g CAS (no matter if it's a black or green top). If you have one of the CAS' pictured in this link, it's a 1g CAS.
RRE Instructions

Since you mentioned you have link, you can go to the DTC tab and uncheck the "random misfire" box and be good to go. It will not harm your car. Keep the "use non-95/96 CAS" box check.

Questions for you! Thanks for the fast reply! I have the one in the first picture, and i also have one now in my hand that looks simillar to the last one. its got a dome black plastic top. i can take a pic and post it if you would like to see it?
1) Would it be bennificial to use this style CAS? if so, is it plug and play?
2) You mentioned all i need to do is uncheck "misfire" in the DTC section in link, will the CEL be only disabled or will the car actually stop misfiring, and if it stops, is there any reason for this after the DTC check is disabled?? Thanks!

It's usually recommended to use the hall effect CAS (black top one) if you have one. Yes, you should be able to just unplug and unbolt the old one and put on the new one. Just make sure you properly set base timing after the swap using a timing light and grounding the timing pin via link.

Yes, the misfiring will actually stop with that box unchecked. It stops because link will not check anymore for that error to be thrown, so it won't affect the car anymore. That logic works for any of those items in the DTC tab.

Oh very good to hear! Now, why is it recommended to use the BLK top sensor as opposed to the other types? Hope you dont mind these questions.. i like to learn WHY something is a certain way.. im not a very A/B person :thumb:

There's a bit of info on this above the CAS pictures in that link. What it boils down to is the hall effect sensor is different than the optical sensor of the green top CAS. It supposedly has better resolution, but in the end, they both will get the job done. I've had a green top on my car since I bought it, and have had a black top in a box for over a year and my car's been running just fine.

Awesome, thanks for the information. I unchecked "missfire" under the DTC tab in link and i should be good to go then now, i appreciate the help, you have been very helpful to me in my other posts as well. Rep pts 4 u :thumb:

Since this is exactly the problem I am running in to, I am glad to hear that I can clear the box in Link. But can you explain to me how unchecking a box in Link will cause the misfires to stop happening? I can understand how that would prevent the DTC from appearing, and even how it might prevent the car from acting odd after the misfire is detected, but surely it can't prevent the misfire from happening at all..
