I have a 90 talon tsi awd and i just got a new big 16g turbo and a turbosmart boost controller......i was wanting to raise the boost....because at this point i'm running 7 PSI( I guess thats stock) and i was wanting to raise it to about 14psi....what do yall think? It has a rebuilt head if that helps. How much power will 7 more psi give me on average?

do you have a boost gauge? what type of fuel mods? and where did you get the 7 psi from? before you touch ANYTHING make sure that you have an accurate boost gauge. the stock one is a joke to say the least

First off, Buy a boost gauge, And then a logger. From there, I would actually get an exhaust and then a fuel pump.. And then start turning the boost up, (While looking at the logger of course.) I say get a fuel pump and exhaust, Because your profile has nothing at all. So from that, I am guessing you have no mods.. Even though your post says you have a 16g, You need to fill out your mods list.

Stock everything should let you run around 14 psi safely. 1 psi = aprox 10 hp.

But I would never raise boost with out a real boost gage (the stock one is just the theoretical boost the ecu calculates). Actually I would never do anything without a logger. GEt a logger and you'll be confident and enjoy your new found power.

on a 14b? so are you telling me that if you run 18psi hey is going to have 280hp on a 14b with no other supporting mods.. hmmm i am not to sure about that one. i know on MOST turbos that rule is pretty standard but the td05 are small turbos so i don't think it applies to them

the poster is running a big16g, not a 14b.

No I am not telling you that at all. I said 14 psi is the most you can run safely and 1psi = approximately 10 hp. It up to him how he gets to higher boost without knock. Supporting mods yield zero horsepower. Supportign mods only allow him to run more boost/timing which DOES yield more horsepower. More air = more horse power. More timing = more horsepower. Oh, by the way, less fuel = more horsepowerOMG !

There are TD05H 20Gs out there!

And no he would not have 280 hp if he can reach that boost level without knock. He would have 270hp.

Stock boost is 10psi. 8 more psi X 10 hp/psi = 80 more horsepower

190chp (Stock 1g) + 80 hp = 270hp at the crank.

It has been verified over and over again. 1 psi = about 10 hp.

Yes but one turbo that is at 80% efficiency at 10 psi is not going to make noticable more horsepower than a smaller turbo w/ 70% efficiency at the same 10 psi. Although, yes the big 16g turbo can flow more air any given boost over the 14b, a stock 4363 long block is not going to magically demand more air than when runnign a stock 14b. If a 14b can maitain boost to redline on the engine running 14 psi then an upgraded turbo that will be running the same 14 psi is not going to yield any more power. Bigger turbo's are for those of us who want to run more boost than their current setup or want to have their engine flow more air than current (upgrade cams, sheet metal intake, stroker, etc).

But thanx. That is agood point he has a big 16g so he's going to be more efficient at higher boosts which will allow him to run a boost level that will knock with a 14b becasue of the efficiency of the turbo.

Again how he achieves the fuel flow to match this airflow is his choice. . .

Buy a mechanical boost gauge. Then buy a logger. Then crank it up until you see lots of knock being picked up. Then dial it back until the knock disappears.

:talon: I bought a mechanical boost gauge and installed it while i was running the 14b and it registered 7 psi.....thats why i thought it was the stock psi setting. Could the old turbo have been performing poorly....thus giving me only 7 psi? I installed the big 16g and right now have it set at 10 psi.....I haven't gotten a logger yet.....where can i get one from? Thanks guys.......keep the info coming in.

My official 1992-1994 Mitsubishi Eclipse Service Manual copywrited my Mitsubishi Motor Corporation states that stock bost pressure is 6.0 - 10.8 psi standard for a M/T; and for an A/T (TD04-13G-5 turbo), it is 5.4 - 9.9 psi standard.

I think I was running around 7-8psi stock. Now with the evo im at 10psi, I think it has a bigger wastegate than the 14b. Anyways I wouldnt turn any boost up untill u get some fuel mods and a way to control the fuel. All cars are different so what works with someone else may not work with your car, so just turning up the boost is a good way to find yourself building a new motor.
