With the T-case off the car, both plugs in, and oil in the t-case. Should the oil leak out from output end for the driveshaft, like in the picture? Or does that mean that the end seal is fubared? Or is the endseal there to stop it from leaking out while the driveshaft is engaged in the t-case?

The driveshaft should be in the T-case while checking for leaks. Examine the seal and check for wear.

I'm pretty sure fliud is supposed to leak from there. If you wann keep the fliud in it when you take the transfer case off your supposed to keep that end in the air.

Exactly. To see if your case was leaking there before you took it off, examine your driveshaft tunnel above where the end of your transfer case would be. If it looks like it has been splattered with gear oil, you need to take your car to the dealership and have the free recall performed.

Fluid is not supposed to leak from there, but it will if there is nothing plugging it. If you are taking it off, do yourself and your garage floor a favor and just drain it.

Reason I asked this is that I took the old locked up t-case off, and before putting the new one on, I filled it full of fluid, being as it's easier to do it off then on the car. And it started leaking out the end that I said. Hence the question.

Either way, everything is back together and working. Rear end has taken a beating though, quite a big glob of shavings on the drain plug magnet, and the oil didn't look to healthy either. Hopefully she'll hold up for a while longer.

In that case, it is 'normal' for it to leak out of the back if you fill it with no driveshaft in it, just as it would be 'normal' for your oil to leak out if you try filling your engine without everything plugged.

The case is meant to be filled when it is on the car. Make sure the car is level, then fill until the level hits the fill plug hole.

Also make sure to get the recall done on this one so you don't end up in the same boat. Don't let them give you any crap if it has already been done. Just kindly direct their attention to the greasy seized up case you should be holding in your hands.

oil is not suppossed to leak. we dont do these very often at the mitsu dealer i work at, but when we do its usualy because the owner noticed it leaking.

The seal is worn,.....its also a factory recall.

BUt before you go to the dealer and say fix my t-case leak...a service maneger has to approve it with the information provided by what the techs observed.

A good sign to to look for is by looking above the xfer for oil splatter, and your down pipe for oil stains

this link will explain. http://www.tmo.com/today/faqs/xferleak.htm
