Hi guys

Putting a 98 GSX manu tranny + engine into my 97 GSX auto.

Wondering about a couple of things :

1 : I've read that you dont need to change the ECU , but the auto ECU has alot more wires than the manual one ( from the auto-tranny i assume ) , will i need to change my ECU or can i just unplug those wires that are not in use ?

2 : Im putting in a new stock t25 turbo ( my turbo died and im using the one from the 98 spare parts car. I need gasket and seals when installing the new one. Did a quick search on extremepsi and came up with this result : EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts

Are there other gaskets i need? if so , name or partsnumber? :D

3 : I also need new oil for my transferbox , is there a special one i should use here , maybe via extremepsi?

Thnx

1. you should be able to leave those connectors loose in the engine compartment they shouldn’t harm anything and the ECU wont care, but if you want it to look good then you might want to either remove the wiring all together or get a hold of a MT harness.

2. there are a couple of other gaskets you might want to replace other than just that, are you pulling the O2 housing off with the turbo or are you using the one in your car? also it might be a good idea to replace the copper crush gaskets for the oil line and the coolant lines. if you get a turbo gasket kit from checkers or autozone it should have everything you should need and they are only $20 for the felpro kit if i remember correctly.

3. cant remember off the top of my head for the t-case but anything should be ok as long at you get the right thickness... transmission is 80-90wt gear oil, t-case might be the same may be

keeping the O2 housing for now, will do more later with that :)

ok found the gasket kit at autozone , what site is checkers? when i googled it i just found the hamburgerplace LOL

You can still run the car with the auto ECU. Some say to unplug the TCU, but I kept it plugged in. Did you already bypass the neutral switch? Did you switch out the rear diff.? Because I have heard the gear ratio is different. I have drivin my car for awile with the auto diff., but I cahanged it out. On the question on the gear oil it is the same you use for the transmission. I use Mobil gear oil in mine.

theres is a thread all about this here.. I just thought about doing it myself.. but I dont know how to do much of it and my friend told me it was a waste of time.. which really sucks :/ but here it is:

just completed the swap this saturday, wasnt half bad actually.. Little adjustment here little adjustment there

Had both the cars in my garage though, both shells next to eachother so if i forgot something i just checked what the other one looked like

My car is running much much better now ( maybe im just imagining it but ) , im verry happy with the swap

97 auto into a 98 manu ( 98 engine and tranny )

When you switch from auto to 5speed on a GSX do you need a different rear end? thats what i heard. I was going to do a 5speed swap when my trans blew but I was still new to the game and a little intimated on doing the swap by myself.

you do have to swap the rear end because they have different ratios.

And if your looking for a 5 speed rear diff i have a mint one and i am in the market for an auto rear diff. PM me if your interested in a trade because i am. LOL
