Question about wiring up an Autometer gauge

I just picked up some Autometer Cobalt series gauges. They somewhat differ from hooking up my old Autometer Phantoms.

The wiring harness is 3 wires instead of 2.

Ground
12 Volt power
12 Volt dash

What exactly is the 12 volt dash? Dimmer? Instructions are not clear. Is this really even needed? I know on every audio head unit I've ever installed there is a dash wire I never use and the radio's still work fine.

Yea it just allows the gauge light to dim when you dim the interior light. Which gauge are you talking about.

Any of the Autometer Cobalts I suppose. I have a couple sitting here and they all have the 3 wires for the power/ground.

The ones I have here are fuel pressure, EGT and boost.
