There are 2 versions of this knob; short and long. They both will place the knob at the same height, but the long version will go down lower on the shift lever. If your car has a shift boot that sits lower, the long version is probably better for you otherwise the short one is the way to go.

The M10x1.25 shift knob fits most Nissan and Mitsubishi applications.

I have a 1g and the shift boot is in the normal postion and I want to cover the metal, should I get the long or the short shift knob?

what knob are you talking about?? pics, linky? If i was to guess id say long version since you say it laps over a little which is what your wanting.
