So I have a question, I have smoke coming from my exhaust. It is blue and smells like fuel. My question is I read on here that someone had the same problem and it turned out to be a clogged oil return line. I used alot of black rtv on my oil return line so could if it was clogging the tube will that cause the car to smoke???? Please help me out

Well if the return line was clogged the oil wouldn't be getting out of the turbo from there, but it would be pushing past the shaft seals into the hotside of the turbo and spitting into your hot exhaust and burning hence the blue smoke. Blue=oil.

Makes sense and now that I think about it I don't think it started smoking until after I used black silicone on it. Now I have to find the gaskets for the oil return line because I don't want to have to buy the whole turbo kit. I will be so happy if doing this fixes my problem cause it is real annoying driving around smoking. Thanks man

if its a stock turbo, you should be able to get a gasket kit from like advance auto, autozone, oreilly's, etc.

Mindset....what are you thinking? Piston rings? We hardly no any information about the car.

The return line wouldnt cause it to smoke, its oil being burned somewhere so it may be the turbo seals are going bad. Do a compression test, and if numbers are bad do a leak down test. Also check turbo for shaft play, if your burning oil you might start to get some shaft play in the turbo.

Get back to us with what you find.

I'm not a flamer but, Mindset have you lost your mind?? Your telling this guy to tear apart his motor for a little smoke without even knowing if it has been taken apart recently.

That being said I won't say he isn't correct, but there are other things that don't require a full tear-down of the engine. Most have been listed by others.

Long and short of it is:
Blue Smoke=Oil

Definitely do a compression and leak down test first before tearing anything apart. Any smoke coming out of the oil cap or dipstick tube?

oh also how much miles on the car? it might also be valve seals like mine.... when i let my car idle for a long time and then gas it it blows blue smoke.... but only if i let it idle longer than 10 mins.... other than that it doesnt blow smoke when im driving the car or boosting it....

It is the stock 14B. It started out only smoking under boost but now it smokes when it warms up. If I am driving and I don't boost it isnt that bad but if I do then I get alot of smoke. I have very little shaft play in the turbo but I was told when I got the turbo it was pretty much brand new. The head is good because I got it from a friend that said it was rebuilt. The only reason I am thinking clogged oil return line is because it started smoking after I loaded it up with black rtv. It does not smoke out of the dipstick or oil cap. I will definetly do a compression test before I tear anything apart, I just figured I would do the easiest first (oil return line).

Thanks for the advice. I just did a compression test and got 145 across the board.

I do have one more question. If my timing was off will that cause lower numbers? I know that 145 is still with limits but I see some people have much higher numbers?? My timing belt is good but my CAS has to be out of time because I never timed it. I also had a lot of black sut on the ring of my plugs and the the plugs themselves were almost white.

hmm from the last statement it sounds like lean fuel you mght be mistaking white smoke for blue smoke, I am slightly color blind and can't easily tell sometimes. White smoke, if I am correct, usually means either coolant or lean fuel are you running a Wideband in it by chance?

I am not running a wideband and I know I am either running rich or lean. I have no coolant in the oil or vice versa. I know someone is going to chime in about how wrong this is but I need to fix my CAS because I have it adjusted so that the idle is low.

Check your return line. If all that is good it may be your valve stem seals. They tend to dry up and crack and that causes it to smoke under boost and at idle. While cruising mine never smoked.
