1g talon there is a loud cranking sound coming from the Timing Belt side of the engine. after the rebuild the car started to make a loud cranking sound after it was parked for a few months. I parked it because I thought the oil pimp was failing. Sound wasn't heard before the car sat. Approximately 1500 miles on it after rebuild. Engine didn't seem to pop or sputter it actually idled smoothly from the RPMs. Any ideas if this engine is worth saving or is it scrap? I know without hearing the sound its hard to tell but has anyone one else had experience with this. Just looking to see if this has happened to anyone else after there car was parked.

Like you said with hearing the noise it will be hard to diagnose. Do you have the means to take a video and upload it? What do you mean by "cranking" noise? Like a knock, grinding, or neither?

What gave you the impression the oil pump was failing? Knock, ticking noise or no oil pressure? Also do you have an aftermarket oil pressure gauge? I had a similar noise that sounded like rod knock when I first put my 2.3 stroker in the car. Mine turned out to be the AC belt making the noise. Check to make sure all of your pulleys and belts are tight. Uploading a video would a lot.

A separated crank pulley will also give you a knock/tick sound, so check it and make sure the pulley is still intact.

Start simple.....check all the basics before you go diving into a tear down/rebuild mode....I had a buddy with a Cadillac cts-v and the passenger headlight would go on and off at random...first thing I checked what the wire harrness and found the it was rubbing up against the plug wire and was picking up interference under throttle that was messing with his balast resistor for his hid lights....stupid really...but a 3 cent zip tie fixed it....

I do have a video , not sure how to upload it to the forum. Thanks for all the quick reply's. It does sound more like a loose belt knocking around, the sound did not sound like metal on metal, or any kind of grinding. The engine will idle at 1,000 RPM but I am hesitant to run it so I don't. There is no aftermarket oil pressure gauge and I have had problems with the stock one. I am sure you all know how terrible the connection is for them.
I will be starting off simple and working my way down. First checking the timing components to see if anything had loosened up. I did replace the timing adjuster when I did the belts and pulleys and all that. That was truly a pain in my ass.
Any suggestions on a decent aftermarket oil Pressure set up. Looking for efficient the engine is still predominately stock so I don't need anything race ready. Again thanks for the advice hopefully my next post will be about an upgrade not a problem.

I agree. Just check all bolts and belts are tight. Mine did the same thing and it was because the a/c compressor went bad. And as far as the oil pressure. Autometer gauges are a good bang for your buck. Just make sure you run the sensor remotely or the vibrations will either kill the sensor or break it and cause massive leaks.

I vote for checking all the basics. Making sure the the starter isnt grinding. Also that all the belts and covers on the timing side are not rubbing or interfering with anything. I am paranoid when it comes to my engine and abnormal noises but I have learned to check my basics and not to over react before proper inspection

I appreciate all of the advice my plan is as follows:

1. Open up the timing covers.
2. Check timing belt, pulleys, and auto adjuster
3. Check oil pressure unite while down there.
4. hopefully re post of success.

Thanks guys
