Pulling the motor but need some suggestions.

So it's come time to pull my motor as i've come to the conclusion that my piston rings are fried. I'm looking into just taking the motor apart and just getting everything inspected, replacing what needs to be while doing maintenance, cleaning, polishing and all the good stuff.

I am not looking into building it up with wiesco pistons and rods or anything like that, in the future for sure, but that's not my goal or priority right now. I just want a quick car with a reliable engine.

I just need some suggestions on what to avoid, what to look into that's worth doing so, and any tip that you feel are worthy of sharing since this is my first time pulling my motor out and stripping er' down.

I would recomend inspecting the rod bearings as long as you are going to have motor torn apart. But as long as you have it apart I would give everything a good look over.

If you're going to pay someone to spec out your bearings and such, then you really don't need to do too horribly much. I'd replace the pistons if you're going to keep your rods - just get some cheap OEM ones. Of course, you're going to want to eliminate your balance shaft with the Mirage shaft while you've got it torn apart. If you're going to spec everything out yourself, then you need to read this book:

You'd also be looking at some money in all the tools you'd need to do the job right - and that's going to cheap route on some things like mics and calipers. Things like checking your head for flatness and for cracks you're going to have to leave to a machine shop. Some people like to use Plastigage for assembly - I prefer mics myself - I use Plastigage to verify my measurements are accurate. Just take your time and invest in a good torque wrench. If you really want to do all the work yourself, say so and I'll try to give you a list of most of the tools you'd need to do the job right.
