ok ive got to pull my head and replace the metal mits HG with the stock composite one... its leaking coolant from the sides... i hope that putting the composite one back on will stop the leaks from the side... otherwise the engine runs great and there are no compression leaks.
my question is, i dont want to take my turbo apart or even take the coolant or oil lines off, is it possible to remove the exhaust mani without taking the turbo off? or is it possible to pull the head without messing with the turbo?

idk about a turbo but if you can get to all your exhaust bolts just pull all the studs out and it ccomes off real easy. im currently pulling my head and the exhaust was easy but i dont have a big turbo in my way

You don't have to take the turbo or manifold off, but it makes working on everything a lot easier. And if you're going to take the head off yourself, it makes it lighter and easier to put back on. Good luck

Josh

Thanks, one of the bolts that goes from the mani to the turbo is actually a stud... Is that a problem? Is that how yours are? Also what should I do to clean the head very well? Thanks again

If your current head gasket is leaking coolant I don't know why you think just putting another in will magically fix the problem. You need to have the surface of the head checked while it is off to make sure it is still flat as can be. I would also lay a metal straight edge on the block to check it out. The mitsu multi-layer head gaskets are normally very good so I think the problem lies in your engines mating surfaces.

I just went to the dealership and talked to one of the mechanics... Appearantly I must have the head decked... Now what do I do for a spacer gasket? Must I remove the manifolds for him to be able to deck it?

Is he saying that because the head is warped?

That could be why your composite head gasket kept leaking.

No appearantly the machine shop that the dealership uses doesn't always tell the truth... So when I had my head Checked originally, he said that it didn't need to be decked.... But obviously Now it does... Fail! What about spacer gaskets? And will the manifolds need to come off so the head can be decked?

Most machine shops would request that you remove the manifolds and the metal plates for the timing cover so they can more easily clamp the head to a mill table.

If they have to take off so much that you can't use a normal head gasket then I would get a new head. You should be able to pick one up fairly cheaply.

Spacer to make up the compression increase I assume your asking? Not needed.
Any head machine work will need the head stripped, take it off yourself so the machine shop doesn't screw something up.

If you have read some of my recent posts, I just had to take the 1G head off my 7 bolt because the guy that did my head work screwed up and did not pressure test it before sending it back to me. Any way, I had to take the transmission mount and driver side mount out and tilt the motor up in order to get the harmonic balancer off. It has to come off so the front cover can come off so that the timing belt can be removed. I have a 1993 1G 7bolt.

Alright thanks guys, I've done the timing before with the engine in the car but i haven't pulled the head with the engine in the car... Can I re uses the Mitsubishi HG afTer I have the head milled? I haven even drivin a mile on the HG... and Im gonna use the copper spray also... Should take are of the coolant leaks...
