pulled over for a loud BOV? NOT CA.

Ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssh.

He's running SD, he doesn't need to vent nor does recirculating with a SD setup offer any real performance.... some debate that it actually takes away from performance.

Regardless of debating performance benefits, it needs to be recirculated not wrapped with a wool sock. I do not understand the mentality of some people on here. Hmmm I'm gonna pull this part off my car and replace it with Another but wrap it in a sock. Rofl

With SD it does NOT have to be recirculated... and he said the sock was to quiet it down. I think it was more of a "hey lets try this for sh**s and giggles" not a real solution.

Here's the mentality. The stock plastic BOV leaks, the HKS SSQV does not. Since he is already running Speed Density recirculating just means he has to buy extra hardware with NO performance gains.

Do you currently run speed density?

Just to toss this out there, I definitely see faster spool and smoother performance between shifts when recirculating on a larger turbo, even with SD and no matter what the tune. I've tested it several times in various configurations and conditions, and recirculating the BOV always gives me better performance.

On a smaller turbo (14b, 16g, etc), the difference isn't going to be as noticeable...but I bet it's still there to some extent.

YMMV of course.

On my old setup I did run sd briefly and did recirculate while using. Since than I have sold off almost all my performance stuff and rebuilt the whole car as more of a restoration project. I have and always will recirculate until I build a car that it isn't needed at all. After reading some of this kids posts and mod list I would definitely think recirculating would be the best option. Especially since he is crying about police attention. If he has a intake with a recirculation "barb" on the intake it's a 15-20$ investment for the hks fitting. Dunno. Guess I just prefer to do stuff the right way.

Just curious, how so since it's just putting air into the intake tube.

I'm trying to provide a visual/conceptual aid. ;)

The pinwheel would represent the turbine not the compressor, am I right?
Many years ago, Buschur stated that a vented BOV increases performance if the EFI system is designed for such. Of all the fastest cars in the acceleration world NONE run a recirculated BOV.

The op isn't running one of the fastest cars in the world he is running a more or less stock Dsm with eBay mods. He is complaining about cop attention so the best idea for him would be recirculation. Why do you keep arguing for venting? Most of the people on the forum own cars that should be recirculated as a good deal of cars are mildly modded. No need to keep at the venting performance gains as its irrelevant to the point.

So tell me then...how many mods do you need before everyone agrees with your venting of a BOV? Some cars run fine being vented...some cars run like ass that way. When I bought my DSM back in 1998, the first mod I did was an cone intake filter and a vented HKS SSQV. I found that having a well flowing intake pipe pre-turbo took care of most drivability issues. It ran just fine that way for years...until I got a GM MAF-T and it WAS nicer, since things were finally done "properly".

Point is, it's pretty ridiculous for anyone to look at someone's mod list and make a definitive judgement on something that simply comes down to personal taste...especially if the fact they didn't pay top dollar for their mods is used as a supporting argument.

OP: The SSQV is a great valve to use. Vent it if you wish, especially if you're doing it the right way (i.e. GM MAF or SD). Once you get used to the way the BOV reacts, you'll be able to modulate things a bit more when the Piggies are about.

He got a ticket for having a loud BOV. There is no federal statute (at least that I can find) that requires that a BOV must be recirculated. Most states have loud "exhaust" laws but this wouldn't apply. He should be fined nor should he have to spend money to fix an fabricated infraction.

If the cop gave you tickets for having a yellow car would you go repaint it?

You guys are hilarious and clearly are missing my point. Especially rich. :applause:
