I have a 1g, and I'm going to be putting my pte 5031e on it. I have a couple questions regarding installation and proper lubrication. I have done research and I have seen both answers and need input first hand. Do I need an oil restrictor? The turbo is not a ball bearing model and has the mitsu flange. Also which location should I feed it from? Head or oil filter housing? If the oil filter housing, what port? I also need to know what fittings, line and length of line I need to get as I am not familiar with the AN fittings and whatnot. Thanks!
 
Feed from the upper port of the filter housing- restrict as necessary to keep oil pressure entering the turbo below 65psi. This is only speculation....ask PTE what they recommend for max pressure on their turbos; if they cannot tell you this information, they should not be selling turbochargers.

You can buy an oil line kit from any vendor; or if you have a -4AN oil line and need the fitting for the turbo or the filter housing, PM me and I'll help you out.
 
I don't really know a whole lot about bigger turbo setups and stuff. Any suggestions on the best/cheapest place to get a feed and return line kit? I also read something about a factory restrictor in the oil filter housing? Which is why I am confused as to what I need if I even need it. I have read both ways, no you don't, yes you do. Just confusing me LOL

Edit- also, I have an oil pressure gauge, so does it make a difference where I put it on the filter housing?

And correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you do turbo rebuilding and balance stuff?

Lies. There is no restrictor anywhere near the filter housing.

Close to the oil supply line would be best, so the reading is not interrupted by incoming pressure from the oil pump.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you do turbo rebuilding and balance stuff?

Go off what you cars setup is...really depends on that. Do you have Balance shafts? is your OFH ported? if you go with feeding it from the head an concerend about less then clean oil being feed, get a inline filter... Et Cedra
 
I do not have balance shafts, and I'm running a factory non ported filter housing. I was planning on running it from the filter housing, because I have heard that is the best way.
 
I'd run it off the head, for those two reasons... .Your going to have a lot higher Oil pressure then you'll want...At a minimum if you do run it from the OFH run a Restrictor IMHO... .
 
Jusmx141, what's your input on this? I have heard that its bad running it from the head to a larger turbo.. so do you think the ss banjo feed kit from extreme psi with the micron filter with no restrictor from the head would be fine?
 
I've seen DSM's using T3-based turbos fed from the head while having no balance shafts and an unported filter housing go through turbos one after another, and I've seen DSM's using T3-based turbos fed from the head with balance shafts in place whose turbo had thousands of trouble-free miles on it.

The bottom line is you must check the pressure at both locations if you want a clue as to what your turbos durability will be at either location.


I agree with MY1GDSM's suggestion that if you're doing this blind, you should probably feed from the filter housing with a restrictor to bring the line size down to around a -3AN spec, or just run a -3AN line if you can find one.

The majority of damage seems to happen to head-fed T3 turbos when the RPM's are low while cruising...oil pressure at the head may only be 10-15psi at 2k RPMs where under a wide-open throttle condition (drag-only) the head may be just fine.
 
I'm putting my motor all together with this turbo, its not together now. I'm just looking for suggestions on what I should do as I do not know much about this stuff

im still confused. i just did more research and i have heard it every way you can think. from what i have read:
the head location may have too low pressure at idle.
the head location is the best feed for any journal bearing turbo.
the ofh with no restrictor has too much pressure for any turbo.

i dont know everything, im looking for an educated answer, so i dont kill my 5031e.

and now my head is in a tail spin. LOL
