I've searched but haven't come up with what I'm looking for. My question is does anyone know if the stock water temp sending unit will work with an aftermarket gauge? Prosport in particular. I've read that the aftermarket oil pressure gauges will give an inaccurate reading if you use the stock sending unit with them, I was wondering if the same holds true for water temp gauges?
I am in somewhat of a bind right now, while I was installing the prosport gauge the sending unit would not thread in no matter what and the thread pitch looks different on the 2 sending units. THEN when I started to thread the stock sending unit back in the wire at the harness broke off. Out of curiosity I wired up the prosport gauge to the stock sending unit and started the car up and let it get up to operating temp but the prosport gauge got up to 215 degrees and looked to be still climbing so I shut it off. According to the stock gauge I'm always at "normal" temp but I know theres a very broad meaning of what "normal temp" is according to the stock gauge.
Back to my question, does anyone know if aftermarket water temp gauges will read accurately with the stock sending unit?
Right now I have both wired up, but if the prosport gauge isn't giving me an accurate reading then I don't see the point in having it. I bought it from a fellow dsm'er who had it hooked up so it has me puzzled why the threads are different, unless it was on a 1g and 2g's are different which I doubt but thats the only thing I can think of.
Sorry for the lengthy post, just hate asking questions without explaining the situation. Thanks guys.
Edit: nevermind I found what I was looking for. Apparently there are multiple places in the thermostat housing to allow for different size sending units. The gauge seems to be reading between 180 - 185* at cruising and goes up a little at idle so I'm thinking its accurate. Any input on the subject is still greatly appreciated however.
