October 31st, 2008. 215k miles.
I procrastinated and took my car in on the last day inspection was due, expecting it to pass. Since I'm up in Erie, I took it to a shop up here. I just pulled it out of the phone book. When I took the car, it was nothing like what was at the shop. They seemed to specialize in old domestic cars.
Great.
They inspected it. They found...
They quoted me at $450 to fix it all. I told them I had a local shop from down home that I'd rather have do the work (me
).
I got the u-joint for $25 from rockauto and had the new on installed in about an hour and a half. The leaks were just from loose plugs. I fixed the bumper with some fiberglass and Bondo. I had hit a small deer or dog doing about 65mph at 1am the week before. That's what blew my fog lights and parking light. New bulbs for $7 and I was good. So, for about $50 total, I had my car repaired. I hate it when places quote so high.
Since I was home on Thanksgiving break when I fixed all that stuff, I had my local shop inspect it, figuring it would pass...

Great.They inspected it. They found...
- Blown out fog lights
- Blown out parking light
- Oil and tranny fluid leaks (but had no clue where from)
- Bad u-joint
- Cracked bumper (said it had a sharp edge)
