I have the 420a motor. Here lately my power steering pump has been squealing bad. Sounds like a belt was slipping. I know it isn't the belt because it's brand new and it's really tight. I can tell the noise is coming from the pump. I know it has fluid in it and it also has the Lucus power steering fluid in it.
Is the pump going out. I assume so but just want to double check. Is there a possibility I could fix it. I've seen a power steering pump kit somewhere.
Any ideas. And before someone says it I don't want to get rid of it cause it will give me more power. This is a daily drive and I enjoy the power steering. And don't really have the money to fork out buying a new one.

Going to be honest. I had a horrible squeal from my pump about 2 weeks ago. Changed belt, Check out the rack and pinion, turned out that my power steering fluid literally was like old a** oil build up because it was never changed 176xxx is what i have it at, so do the math! LOL...even tho' the fluid in the reservior was looking fine, so I drained and BOOM not problem....drain it all out and go from there...all I can say.:thumb:....The pump itself is pretty high.

You can start by pulling the reservior cap and pulling the RETURN LINE to drain it and changing the filter it's like 4.99 at my work. disconnect the lines to and from the pump/gear, also you can also drain the pump itself. Took me about 1hr. The best way is to run it to a shop and have them bleed the system just to be on the good side. Also if you want to go this route of rebuilding the pump yourself with a new seal/o-ring kit etc....

Specs: Capacity .95qt(US)
Fluid: ATF DEXRON II or equal.

Thanks, I'm going to try and do that tomorrow. I'll post if I come onto problems. And also do you know where I can get the pulley for the pump. I have another post asking but I never got a reply.

if you want the quick and easy, but sometimes messy. you would empty the power steering reservoir with either a suction pump or a turkey baster, remove the return line, plug the hole - where you removed the return line. fill the master, point the end of the return line into a large jug or bottle. have a buddy run the engine for a few seconds.

take care not to let the pump run dry, meaning frequent start/stop, refill/check level.

but before you do all that, make sure it isn't the belt, sometimes a glaze can build up on the belt or pulley. the best way to check is to get some hand cleaner, like gojo with the pumice or any hand cleaner that feels gritty. rub the cleaner onto the belt, then run the engine, if this helps then it helps.

+1 on the turkey baster! that's what I used. Bleed the system right as noted above. On the pulley itself....try "ebay, craigslist, slavage yard" for a complete one...I'll will check back tomorrow if we can get anything at work and will post back with a Part # and Line code.....THERE IS one on ebay for 75 bucks........:thumb: http://www.ebay.com/itm/95-96-97-98...pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr

If I can get the pump to stop squealing I won't need the pump. I'm looking for just the pulley. Mine on my car is warped and throws belt if I get the rpms up.

I was doing some looking at work and there are a few possible pulleys, but on one just for our car, I did NOT see one. By that I mean it was a Chrysler product and it would cross over from my pulley # on the the pump...best bet would pull one off a slavage yard....

i just got my car, also just got the car running, power steering pump squealed like a banshee, then, started to spit fluid, a lot of fluid, think she's shot? can i just remove this thing and call it good? or, whats the weak point that would spit fluid all over? average price on a rebuild kit?
