what would cause just the drivers side pwr seat belt, to stop working suddenly?

thanks in advance!

Have you taken off the door panel lately? If so, you might want to take it back off and make sure you plugged the connection in the middle of the door. I believe there is a fuse, but I was never able to find it. You can check to see if the seatbelt has any power at all by manually turning the motor, and opening or closing the door to see if it moves either way.

i am having the same exact issue. i got a new motor/assembly for mine, thinking the other went bad.

there seems to be two things telling the door that it is closed. when i open my driver side door, the belt goes to the off position. when i close the door, it goes tight like it should. now if i leave the door open, and just push the button on the side, the light on the dash registers that the door is closed, but the power belt says in the forward position, as if the door were open. so there is something else telling the door that it is open or closed. when i hook my passenger side automatic belt assembly up to the driver side cables, it works like it should, so i know the mechanism is good. something on the passenger side is telling the mechanism that the door is always open.

If it stops working suddenly and you switched the motor with a good one, than it has to lie in the wiring. Take off the door panel and do some wire tracing. I believe there is another indicator that the door is closed in the door latch, maybe like a sensor that can read that the door has latched on to it's hook, but I don't know that for sure. So IMO it's wiring.

i have a similar problem, when i open the driver side door, nothing happends, it was like this when i got the car, i dont know if it had anything to do with the accident either...tomorrow i am going to check some fuses, and ill try that door panel idea.. anymore ideas thanx..

Sorry to jump into the middle of your thread but i have been having a problem with my seatbelts as well; both the driver and passenger side seatbelts. I checked fuses, and found no problem with fuses. I know that the switch for the interior lights works but i wonder if the other switch for the seatbelt is the one closer to the front of the door. I wonder if there is some specific wire that i should check, maybe that people cut to make the auto seatbelts quit working. Hopefully what i asked makes sense.

Steve

The switch on the side of the car is ONLY for the dome light. There is another switch in the latch for the door. Test it out on your passanger door to see what I mean. Open your passenger door and press in the latch with something like a screwdriver and your belt should slide back. If your drivers side motor has power I'd look at this switch in the latch.

FYI like jott said belts only close when ignition is in ON position. They will open no matter the ignition position.

Sorry to resurrect/hi-jack this thread, but this driverside seat belt stuck in the "engaged" position (the position it should be in only when the engine is running) is really getting to annoy me.

I've attempted to correct it twice, today being my last attempt. I don't know how everyone else first encountered their problem but I remember mine. For that matter, I've done a ton of searching.

I chose the ground used by a relay? underneath the kick panel and below the auxillary fuse box to ground my gauges. The moment I removed the screw from the ground, my driver side seat belt stopped retreating, my dome light no longer turns on when I open the door, and the auxillary fuse light no longer turns on as well.

Today I borrowed a shop manual referencing everything electrical. I checked fuses 11 and 19 which handle the current. I checked the seat belt control box, the forward and back buttoms on each end of the track, and I checked the "door ajar" buttom on the outside. All functioned well. I tried to reset everything by plugging everything, closing the door, turn the ignition to the "on" position and then plugging everything back (and lemme tell you that's an art of balance and contorsion  ). Nothing, nothing worked. Even with everything unpluged, I could not even manually get the shoulder belt to move an eight of the track distance from "engaged" to "retreat".

My question then is, where do I go from here? I'm all out of ideas. I know it has to logic of some sort, like NOR gate or somethin like that that needs to be set correctly. I know that it would be a relay or wire problem if some processes worked but others not. As soon I get help and get it working I will write a detailed technical article on how to correct the problem. Thank You for your concern and interest.

i fixed it. sorry to not replay for so long.

there is a sensor right behind the locking mechanism. on your chasis door frame, there is a u shaped piece that pushes a metal piece in the door when it shuts. it pushes it on both the first, and the second part of the u:

so, the second push shoves that little metal piece into a little 1x2 inch box that has a button on it. this is what actually tells the seatbelt to move forward or backward, engaged or disengaged. whatever you wanna call it. now.. in mine, it was knocked out. looks like the previous owners had automatic locking stuff, and ghetto rigged the uninstall. so it was just hanging there. Be warned!!!!: This little box is a bi*** to get access to. i mean.. i almost removed my windows, so i could get a hand in there. i ended up having to remove all of the locking mechanisms, all of the door opening rods in the inside of the door, just to get access to that box, and i have small hands. and i was only able to get one screw to hold that sensor thing. i had to get that screw in through the latching mechanism. it was a pain.

So just to let everyone know. There it is. This is how you fix your seatbelts not engaging.

Your process was well written and easy to follow. It wasn't too complicated. Just take care in removing and installing all the door rods.

I totally removed the locking mechanism and found the plastic rod that notifies the car of being closed. It exists to warn the driver that key is in the ignition but the door is still open. Unfortunately it did not move my seat belt from the engaged/aft position to the disengaged/forward position.

My final conclusion after exploring everything primarily mechanical is that something that has to do with the logic needs to be reset. After I take it to my most trusted mechanic, I will report back.
