1997 Auto Eclipse GSX.....................................$5,000

-Blown Turbo...
-Damaged Rack and Pinion...
-97,000 miles...

?Should I buy it?
YES OR NO

if not where can i find a 2g GSX thats under $7,000???????????????

Be careful about buying a car with a blown turbo. How blown is it? If the owner kept driving it when it was chewing up bearings on the inside of it, it could have spread junk all through the engine. When I ripped apart my 7-bolt motor, I saw all the stuff that came out of my turbo. Nasty.

5k$???? no way not unless its a godly body with lambo doors custon paint and body kit
97k miles on motor? blown turbo and messed up steering?
dude that cars been dogged to hell its gonna be a money pit plan on spending another what 5k? on it when u get it

Ok heres my plan...
I buy the evo III and the fitment kit for 750... i have people that will install it for free...
I can get the rack and pinion for 85 from a junk yard.
97,000 miles isnt bad if it was owned buy a girl and she commuted to college... plus the car is in perfect condition...
The total cost of a 97 GSX would be $6000

That is under 7k

If you think that $750 is going to get you a new turbo and installed with NO hiccups or problems arrising then you have not been in the DSM garage huffing enough CO2, LOL. There will be extra cost, trust me.

What else comes with the car performance wise. Fuel, suspension, and other stuff?

If it was a girl driving it and the turbo is blown, that does not remedy the case of a car that is in need of some work. The car was driven or operated IMPROPERLY.

EDITED: *Sorry for all that MAJOR and ENGINE stuff.* (I got your post and this post open at the same time.)

WHY I dont understand why this is such a bad idea???? DAVID15151 how many miles is on your car?

Man, I am sorry. Just been answering alot of questions and had 2 windows open at the same time.

I will edit the post, LOL.

ok so tell me what is so wrong about getting this 97 why would i RUN its gonna take some work and some money

i agree run while you can, if turbo is blown then chaces are motor was beat as well, buy a ca rthat works for that price

Okay- if you want an honest opinion- here it is. If the car is drivable, then take it to the closest shop that you can find, and drop 50 bucks to have them go through the car and take a look at everything. find out what all damage there is to the car. What EXACTLY is wrong with the turbo (did the shaft snap, leaks oil, cracked housing, whatever). What EXACTLY is wrong with the rack and pinion. etc. etc. Have them check over everything. Check the fluids. Ask for a service history in writing with receipts if at all possible. Quiz them on the car. Ask the same question over and over, just at different times in different ways.

This car very well could be a diamond in the rough- an extra grand in work and you'ld have something lots of fun to play with. But at the same time, it could be an unglodly money pit that will suck the very essance of your soul away and turn you into the epitome of a DSMer.

Make sure you have a shop manual before you even think about bringing her home.

I would not buy a broken car because once things start to break.. the rest of the car likes to follow suit. Like ive said before.. with a rack and pinion blown and a turbo dead.. the car was either run hard or not taken care of. Both of these conditions will make a lot of other parts on the car on the brink of going out if they havnt already.

well she ran over a curb with it and must teh rack and pinion up and i dont understand where oyu can find a 97 GSX for 5 grand even 7 grand and how oyu figure the motor is broken how about if i take it to the mitsu dealer and have them inspect it?

though from the sound of it.. the fact is you are still going to buy it no matter what.. because its THE car for you right? I doubt what we say will make you turn away. You are determined to fix it.. and you will.. again.. and again.. until you wake up and say.. damn.. wish I would have listened. Have you at least done a compression test to check the motor? At least do that.

I am goin on saturday to have it inspected by the mitsu dealership if they say theres no major damage than i will proceed but I do take everything you guys say into consideration im am just dying to have an AWD turbo car and when i saw this one for 5 grand i htought it was a steal b/c ive been looking for ones and they are all liek 10,000 and up

i would rather pay 10g and up for a gsx that is in good condition and not much over 80kmiles, cuz ur proly gana end up spending 10g and up on that gsx and to top it off its automatic, gsx would proly be best in 5speed

yeah i can drive manual, and i dont understand how this is "SO" much damage its only a bad turbo and if worse comes to worse i'll have to get a new engine so then i go and spend 2 grand for that what else is bad???? am i missing something here???

You are pretty adamant about getting this car.

Go for it.

This is the last thing I write about it then I have nothing else to say...

If you CAN drive a manual then you should look for one. If you like driving a manual you will enjoy it more in the AWD platform. This car is being purchased "as is" and in doing so you can have NO say when the car starts to have more problems.

Not saying you can't have fun in an auto, this thread is not about the comparison of the 2. Just that you will probly buy the car, fix it, and then find other things needing to be fixed aswell. When all is said and done you will want to make more and more power. Then you will be limited in the AUTO platform. Then you will say, "I will just switch it to manual". That is more work than you would believe. New trans-to-rear. Yes, the auto and manual use different rears.

I know it seems tempting, just be damn sure you want this type of burden.

That is all.

well I figured i cant pass down this offer even if its automatic I still cant find a GSX for under 10 grand that looks as nice as this... but what could possibly go wrong with this car that is different from any other car that has 97,000 miles on it?
