ok so my friend just bought a 97 gst spyder auto. the guy said the only thing wrong was the fuel pump. well new fp and no go. he checked the cylinders through the plug holes and the 4th cylinder doesn't move. we figure the dude snapped a rod or something.

my question

is it a possible fix or is he looking at a new engine?

if new engine whats a decent price for one?

and is there anywhere in AZ that will have one?

thx all ahead of time

Man that sucks BIG time. You'll really be able to determine the damage once you pull it apart but if the piston doesn't move at all it probably trashed just about everything in the bottom end. Check craigslist and other local places for used engines if you're on a really tight budget, but again, pull it apart, see if the block is even usable and start documenting what components are trash and which ones you would be able to machine for a rebuild.

snapping a rod is highly unlikely, im not really informed on 420a but the rod is usually the LAST thing to go. do you hear any clinks or clanks when you hit the starter?

does the starter even turn over the motor????

if the rod broke or bent you would some noise but no movement at all sounds strange. Drain the oil drop the downpipe and oil pan and look at that cylinder while your buddy spins the engine by hand, that will givie you a better idea on whats going in there.

The only way to find out what needs to be done is to take it to a machine shop. I look around for a motor and the price is around 750-1200 for a used motor. That is around the same price to just rebuild one yourself and have that piece of mind of knowing it won't blow up sooner then later. I just got mines back from the shop on Tuesday, it cost me almost 850.00 after tax. Here are some pictures.

spyders come with a 4g64 not a 420a

His buddy's is neither one. Its a GS-T (4G63).

As for your buddy's engine problem, I agree on dropping tha oil pan to see what's going on. Also, listen for any odd sounds ie oil starvation.

well i will tell him to drop and look. this was his first experience with imports. he is a muscle guy for the most part. and im in Oregon myself so i have to do all by phone.

he is in phoenix.

he found a local shop that would put a rebuilt 4g63 in it for 1400. all new parts and a 1 year warranty.

he asked what the diff is between a 6bolt and a 7bolt crank. im not familiar with this engine so any info on it would help.

6 bolt crank has 6 bolts holding the flywheel and 7 bolt has 7 bolts holding the flywheel.

6 bolts are from the 1st gen dsm's. 7 bolts are from 95-99 eclipses. He has a 7 bolt if it is the stock motor. He should just have it rebuilt or he could do it himself and save money. 1400 isn't a bad price if it is done with quality parts. For 1400 I would just order parts and rebuild the motor myself and do it A LOT cheaper and save the rest of the money for other things.
