Sidney,
I'd just like to start off by saying this was the first time I've attempted porting a head. I had a friend do it on his talon, and he said it was easy, but time consuming. I i figured I had the time, why not. Well, everything was going good until I put a small hole (half the size of a penny) from the exhaust port to a water jacket on the very last port. My question is, can it be welded or should I be looking for a new head.

Look for a new head because if you ported all the exaust runners the same like you should you will more than likely have another runner that has a thin spot and thats not good it could break on the motor. How built is the motor this head is going on most 4g63 engines the best port job you can do is pocket port the head and port match the head.

i took a chipping hammer and went around and everything else is fine.....i can also eyeball it and you can tell i took a too much off the one runner

You could have it welded but i would not trust it my input and would not do it at my shop the only heads we had welded were sbc aluminum heads on the intake side because the guy did not want to buy a new one

well, I'm friends with a welder, so I think I'll have him give it a go...its free anyways, if it don't work, i guess its a new head :(. Has anybody ever had, or heard from anybody that has had experience with welding heads. Does it handle the stress put on it?

When my engine blew, it took out the wall in between two cylinders.. Had that welded and it's doing fine. :thumb:

I can see exactly where this thread is going. It's going to end up in the dumb shit bin.

the more I think about it the more I want to get a new head....Problem is I live on Vancouver island, and there is not a single head on it (that won't be sold as a complete engine anyway). And heading over to Vancouver adds 100 bucks to whatever the cost is. I've emailed some classified ads but I haven't not heard a word yet. I guess I gotta play the waiting game :notgood:

I bought a 92 with a crashed head a few months back. I was able to find a donor head off eBay in about a week for $50. Even at $150 that's not too awful.

I've heard good reviews from people who bought rebuilt heads from this vendor

http://stores.ebay.com/J-and-C-Cylinder-Head-Exchange

He doesn't always have his dsm heads listed, but if you email him he usually has a few in stock ready to go. I think when I emailed him it was $300 shipped.

Just to add to that, I just bought a used head and after the machine work and the valve stems it ended up being a little over $300.

yes to port a head right and get good results you have to know what your doing porting the crap out of the is not always the best way to do it,like i said the best for most 4g63's is to pocket port-blending the seats the head and gasket match the the ports

well on the next head, all you really got to do is take out all the casting flash, gasket match, and smooth out the bowls before the valves BEING VERY CAREFUL!You dont need to make the runners extremely big, knife edge the dividers, get rid of the casting flash, port match the gaskets, and i also raised the intake port chambers.spent 4 hours, and just from researching other peoples port jobs on flow benches im sure it did alot

I've went through so many heads on a dsm that I won't even spend the money to get a head ported yet. I would be pretty mad if I just spent $2k on having a head ported just to have the timing tensioner give out and destroy it

I will probably go in there and clean up the casting marks sometime though. I think smoothing those out would help the most at this point. This last head I got has to be one of the worst castings I've had yet.

Of course, maybe those rough casting marks are helping mix the air and fuel better.....?
