PIT exhaust 3" or not

I bought a PIT 3" catback for $375 shipped from horsepowerfreaks a little over a year ago and put it on with a RSR 60-70mm downpipe. Afterwords there wasn't much of a power difference over the stock exhaust though and i didn't really think anything of it after that. Anyway the other day i looked inside the muffler and noticed it wasn't 3" inside, the tip is 4.5" and reduces to 1 3/4". I already have taken out one reducer could this muffler have two or is it just designed that way? Oh and i called horsepowerfreaks and the guy i talked to said he thought that is the way it was made.
2nd question, if it's not a reducer would it be best to buy a new muffler and if so which one?

looks like a silencer built into the muffler to me.

The easiest way is to remove the rear section and cut it off at the muffler. Then measure the tube and buy a muffler to match.

Magnaflow makes a good muffler, 3in in and 3in out. Sound great on our cars to IMO. Yes I do have one on my car too.

That looks like one hell of a restriction. Cut it off at the muffler and have a true 3" straight thru muffler welded on.

I recomend dynomax ultraflow, can be had cheap from summit.

Thanks for the info i figured thats what i might have to do. I always here people saying on here do it right the first time, guess i went a little to cheap and ended up paying alot of money for some 3" piping.

Looks as if you may possibly be able to punch out that silencer-looking centerpiece, try cleaning it out and see if it's removable...

Yea thats what i thought at first too, but i banged on it for about 15min and it didn't budge. The exhaust has been on my car for over a year so maybe its just stuck on there real good, i don't know. Saturday when i go to the exhaust/muffler shop I'll see first if they can get it to come loose, if not I'll just get a new muffler.
